"Attempt by Professor Feeley in July 2009 to intigrate his Ph.D. students and his research activities at Stendhal University"

9 July 2009

Grenoble, France

Dear Colleagues and Friends of CEIMSA,

Below please find 5 items which constitute the exchange in early July between me and Professor Catherine Delmas, acting Director of CEMRA in which I request information about the possibility of my full intigration into research activities in the UFR d'Anglais at Stendhal University. (My request was met with conditions and will be discussed by CEMRA's Board of Directors next September.)

Sincerely,

Francis Feeley

Professor of American Studies/

Director of Research

Dear Catherine,
I am writing to inquire if there might be an interest in incorporating me in the CEMRA beginning next academic year. I have talked with Donna Andreolle about approaching President Lise Dumasy with the request to restore the Internet site of CEIMSA to the Stendhal University server. As you may know, my ninth book will be coming out next month, and I have published more than two dozen articles in refereed reviews, as well as hundreds of occasional pieces. (You can find my entire CV, which is published on the CEIMSA site at The University of California, at the following address:  http://dimension.ucsd.edu/CEIMSA-IN-EXILE/curriculum/CV-FFeeley.html.)

My 8 Ph.D. students are presently enrolled at Nanterre, but if the CEIMSA Internet site were restored on the Stendhal University server, and I was properly integrated into CEMRA, then I could bring possibly 10 Ph.D. students next year back to the Grenoble campus.

My Ph.D. student, Peterson Nnajiofor, who successfully defended his thesis at Nanterre last year (on 6 June 2008) and was qualified by the CNU this past spring 2009, intends to apply this fall for the MC post in American Civilization in our UFR at Stendhal University.

I will look forward to discussing these proposals with you at a mutually convenient time, toward the end of next week, if possible.

Sincerely,
Francis Feeley

Dear colleague,

I am surprised that you should wish to reintegrate the CEMRA after leaving
it a few years ago to join the LLS in Chambéry, then Nanterre, and causing
such havoc in the media and on the internet. First of all, the CEMRA
cannot host or be affiliated to your website. Our research center will
have an official website in September corresponding to the project the
Professors of the CEMRA have set up for the "quadriennal" to come and
already sent to the Vice chancellor, Professor Isabelle Pailliart. We
cannot advertise for events the organising comittee has not planned.
Should you wish to reintegrate the CEMRA, the CEIMSA-in-exile would have
to vanish, and you could not expect any funding for your personal research
projects.

The second thing I would like to say is that I was shocked, like all my
colleagues,  by the campaign you organised against the previous Director
Patrick Chézaud, and the very recent message you sent to the members  of
the SAES, attacking Mr Chézaud personnally, and the members of the English
department for their so-called "conservative anti-strike attitude".
Before  the organising committee of the CEMRA (the Professors to whom I am
sending a copy of this answer) can examine your request, I suggest you
apologize publicly on the SAES website.
However I can meet you next week, and receive your letter of application,
with your CV, the list of your publications, the research programmes you
organised in Chambéry and Nanterre (with the programme, the participants,
and the financial assessment for the conferences and the resulting
publications), as well as a list of your Phd students. Your dossier will
be examined by the organising committee in September.

With kind regards, Catherine Delmas

Hi Catherine,
Thank you for your prompt response to my query into the possibility of integrating into CEMRA.
Below is a copy of the 26 May message I sent to colleagues via SAES mailing list.
Would you be so kind as to tell me what part of this statement you think requires "a public apology"?
Sincerely,
Francis

Dear Colleagues,

The conservative anti-strike position of our UFR d'Anglais at Stendhal University can be explained by the recent history of Stendhal University and of the UFR d'Anglais, which is intimately linked to the career of M. Patrick Chezaud. In case you do not know this influential personality and would like to understand the character of Stehdhal's UFR d'Anglais better --where Patrick Chezaud served as Director from 1998 to 2004, before he was elected President of Stendhal University (2004-2008)-- I would like to introduce you to M. Chezaud with a talk he gave at Grenoble in 2005 <http://www.canalc2.tv/video.asp?idVideo=3683&voir=oui>, just one year after he attempted to erase every trace of my research activities in Grenoble with the research center CEIMSA <http://dimension.ucsd.edu/CEIMSA-IN-EXILE/newsletter/newsletter-22.html>and to remove me from his University.

This is called libel, for which you could be sued, and the board of directors of the SAES wrote to you about this.
I do not intend to discuss the matter any further. With kind regards, Catherine Delmas
