Subject: Descriptions of Events are to Facts as
Melodies are to Lyrics - On getting away with murder by using false analogies
and the O. J. Simpson paradigm.
Dear
Colleagues and Friends of CEIMSA,
Reading
Genviève Bolléme’s 1964
book, La
Leçon de Flaubert, has been a trip down
memory lane. I was in my late teens when I aspired to be a writer, and was
encouraged by a poetry professor whose class I much enjoyed to read more
carefully and seek clues for becoming an accomplished writer. I prepared myself
to live life to the full and to write about what I had experienced. This
included hitching hiking across Western Europe when I was 18, carrying a tattered
copy of “Portrait of an Artist as a Young Man,” in my backpack. I began my
adventure with my first step out of the International Airport in Shannon,
Ireland on my way to Dublin, which eventually led me to London, Paris, Munich, Berlin
and beyond, before I returned to France and went to Le Havre, where I embarked on a 6-day voyage to
New York aboard the student chartered, Italian ship, SS Aurelia, in the company
of a motley group of American students and teachers.
My
favorite literature teacher, Joseph Murphy, was above all an inspired
craftsman, who loved teaching. He introduced me to the world of authors including
French writers like Baudelaire and Flaubert (in English translation) and Anglophone
writers like James Joyce and Ernest Hemmingway, but always emphasized firsthand
experience as the best teacher: “Don’t try to write about anything that you
don’t know thoroughly, no matter what it is,” he had told me. I found his
advice to be a challenge and an invitation to make discoveries out in the wide
world and to find the right words that properly described what I had found. My
“built-in-bull-shit-detector” was soon under construction, to borrow from
Hemmingway’s advice to young writers.
Professor
Murphy was refreshingly free of liberal dogma, and I benefited from his advice on
many occasions. Looking for le mot just became
an obsession for a while, as I developed the courage to investigate the world
around me and convey in words the truth as I experienced it. I, of course, sought the
same quality in other people, but often found it to be lacking (for
understandable reasons, to be sure).
The
24+ items below reflect the complexity of “the politics of chaos” that
is being currently engineered in societies today. This desperate disarming
tactic by our rulers has shown a temporary success in diminishing our cognitive
faculties, but for a long-term strategy it has little potential to protect the
rule of oligarchs. As honest Abe Lincoln once penned: “You can fool some of the
people all the time, and all of the people some of the time; but you can’t fool
all the people all of the time.”
Certain
cultural virtuoso technicians have perfected this technique of social control,
but they have abandoned a commitment to the truth: in a word, they adhere to a
“Coherency Theory of Truth” (the logical consistency of a narrative) and a utilitarian
“Pragmatic Theory of Truth” (if it
ain't broke, don’t fix it), both of which have gained temporary prominence in certain
influential circles, but come at the expense of the “Correspondence Theory of
Truth” (words as a loyal depiction of reality); the outcome is that we are
being fed lies continually, which necessarily have become distortions built on
distortions, until the house of cards must fall. This should be a joyful day
for all of us, with fresh air and sunshine enriching our much impoverished
souls….
Sincerely,
Francis McCollum Feeley

“South Africa scored an astonishing win against
Zionism”
by Pepe Escobar
ICJ ruling indicts US, UK,
Germany.
Let’s cut to the
chase:
By 15-2, the International Court of Justice (ICJ)
has just ruled in favor of BRICS member South Africa, and ordered Israel to
take all necessary measures to prevent a genocide in
Gaza.
When it comes to the most scrutinized genocide ever,
followed 24/7 by every smartphone on the planet, it’s
fair to argue that South Africa has just scored an astonishing win against
Zionism.
And yet, as a Global Cynic Armada argues, in
practical terms there has been no call for a ceasefire in Gaza.
Of course it may also be argued that calling for a
ceasefire only applies to a war – as in the case of the proxy war in Ukraine.
Gaza is a case of genocide of an indigenous population perpetrated by an
occupying power. That calls for an immediate halt to all genocidal acts.
Essentially this is what the ICJ has ordered.
The South African Foreign Ministry has noted that
“if one reads the sentence, it’s implicit” that a ceasefire must be imposed.
The inestimable former British ambassador Craig
Murray has noted that “after an extremely damning
exposition of the facts by South Africa”, powerfully “and meticulously well
stated”, conclusions were inevitable.

It is already abundantly clear that Israel is
adamant to ignore the demands of the ICJ and carry through with its genocide
until its horrific end. Instead of reversing course, key forces in Israel
celebrate their drive for genocide against the Palestinians and their objective
of an Israeli colonization of Gaza. See this.
Consequently, Israel will not put to justice anyone
involved in its genocide.
We must remember, that the genocide is carried out
by the criminal orders and/or criminal incitement by top Israeli leaders like
president Herzog, the prime minister Netanyahu, the defense minister Galant, the security minister Ben-Gvir,
foreign minister Katz, and finance minister Smotrich.
Benny Gantz is probably also guilty as part of this
gang.
READ
MORE: Gaza Genocide Will Continue
Guilty
is the Israeli military top and lots and lots of people all the way down to
soldiers committing the acts. We
also have Israeli media, religious persons, analysts, legal experts, and
diplomats involved.
Like Germany 1945, we confront a state and society
infested with genocidal ideology, its meticulous planning, and its bloody
execution. And the trials afterwards proved no remorse among the
perpetrators.
Haaretz today 29 January 2024,
lists nearly all the above-named persons as involved in genocide or incitement
to genocide. Haaretz further writes that the ICJ
ruling should by adhered to by Israel as a “yellow card” for Israel, including
its leaders. But Haaretz is deluded in believing any
Israeli institution will take action against the genocide continuing, or any
action against any individuals leading or inciting it.
Somebody else must bring justice.
Like Germany 1945, there is no chance that the
country itself will stop and carry out justice once its bloody genocide fails
in an abyss of self-destruction. Like the trial in Nüremberg
in Germany 1945, the outside World will have to organize and carry through the
trial for the genocide carried out by Israel in coordination with the USA. An
international trial, in which US President Biden, Antony Blinken,
Jake Sullivan, and Lloyd Austin will stand accused as well. And like the World
saw at Nüremberg in 1945, there is no chance that the
defendants will show any remorse, not even in the minute when their sentence
was carried out.

The
world has changed dramatically since the United States began its legal pursuit
of WikiLeaks publisher
Julian Assange, bringing new risks to the U.S. if it
persists in pursuing him to the end.
The geo-strategic situation and the state of the
media are today nearly unrecognizable from 2010, when the U.S. empaneled a grand jury to indict Assange.
Conditions have changed significantly since even 2019, when he was dragged from
the embassy and the indictment was unveiled.
The United States is in the midst of suffering its
third major, strategic defeat since the process against Assange
began, bringing potentially significant consequences for the U.S., the world
and possibly Assange.
In just the past three years, the United States has
experienced humiliating defeats in Afghanistan, Ukraine, and now Gaza.

Dressing Like Palestinians”
by Rayhan Uddin
Dressed in medical scrubs, Islamic thobes and hijabs, wearing face

upon Jenin‘s Ibn
Sina Hospital on Tuesday.
The agents are known in Arabic as mustaribeen, which means to “dress and act like an Arab”,
and in Hebrew as mistaarivim, a derivative of the
Arabic word.
The operatives – disguised as Palestinian medics, patients and civilians – raided
the facility in the occupied West Bank, killing three people. One of the
Israeli officers reportedly spoke in Arabic during the operation.
The raid took place at 5:30am, and took around 10
minutes, according to Israeli media.
The special forces involved
were the latest in a long history of undercover Israeli agents pretending to be
Palestinian.
Their existence goes as far back as the British
Mandate of Palestine in the first half of the 20th century, during which
British authorities worked with Zionist militias to infiltrate Arab populations
in the region.
“Mistaarivim started as an
undercover unit in the Palmach division, which was
part of the terrorist militia of Haganah, the core of
the Israeli army,” Emad Moussa,
a researcher specialising in
political psychology in Israel and Palestine, told Middle East Eye.

“War on Gaza: Israeli Board Game Calls on Players to
‘Come Build Your House in Gaza!’”
Delegates at an Israeli conference calling for the
re-settlement of Israelis in Gaza were handed a board game that seemingly
allowed players to map out where they would establish homes in the enclave
after it was conquered.
The game, titled, “Come Build Your House in Gaza!”
shows a layout of Gaza separated into different neighbourhoods
with Hebrew names and explanations of the meaning behind each of them.
It was seen at the Victory Of
Israel conference, an event hosted in Jerusalem on Sunday by right-wing Israeli
politicians, campaigners and religious figures calling for the building of
Israeli settlements in Gaza after the end of the war.
The conference was attended by 11 cabinet ministers
and 15 coalition members of parliament.
Players of the game are invited to place wooden
house-shaped blocks, with their names written on stickers, on the neighbourhoods they want to settle in.
Among them is the “Heroes of Gaza Neighbourhood”, which it says will be established on top of
the Shujaiya neighbourhood.
An estimated 300 people were killed in a single Israeli strike
on a residential block in Shujaiya in December of
last year.
“The translation to Hebrew is ‘Neighbourhood
of the Brave,'” reads the caption, referring to its current name.
“The name comes from the Muslims who fought the
Crusaders in the Gaza area. The name can also be attributed to the [Israeli
army] fighters who fought in the city,” it says.
Another is listed as the “Gavish
neighbourhood”, currently al-Nasser, which the game
says is named after Egyptian President Gamal Abdel
Nasser, who fought with Israel repeatedly, including in the 1967 war that saw
the capture of Gaza.
“Its name will be changed to honour
chief commander of the Southern Command in the 6-day war, Yeshayahu
Gavish,” reads the caption, using another name for
the 1967 war.
Israel has occupied Gaza since 1967, and during that
time built numerous settlements across the territory in which Israeli Jews
settled.
In 2005, however, Prime Minister Ariel Sharon
ordered the destruction and evacuation of the Gaza settlements, a move which
many right-wing Israelis opposed and continue to regard as a mistake to be
rectified.

East

by Israel Shahak and Prof Michel Chossudovsky
Update and Analysis
On October 7, 2023,
Hamas launched “Operation Al-Aqsa Storm.” which
was led by its Military Chief Mohammed Deif.
On that same day, Netanyahu confirmed a so-called “State of
Readiness For War”. Israel has now (October 7, 2023) officially
declared a new stage of its long war against the people of
Palestine.
Military operations
are invariably planned well in advance (See Netanyahu’s January 2023
statement below). Was “Operation Al-Aqsa Storm”
a “surprise attack” ?
U.S. intelligence say they weren’t aware of an impending Hamas
attack.
Did Netanyahu and his
vast military and intelligence apparatus (Mossad et
al) have foreknowledge of the Hamas attack.
Was a carefully
formulated Israeli plan to wage an all out war against Palestinians envisaged
prior to the launching by Hamas of “Operation
Al-Aqsa Storm”? This was not a failure of Israeli
Intelligence, as conveyed by the media. Quite the opposite.
Evidence and
testimonies suggest that the Netanyahu government had foreknowledge of
the actions of Hamas. And “They Let it Happen”:
Following the Al Aqsa Storm Operation on October 7, Israel‘s defence minister described Palestinians as “human
animals” and vowed to “act accordingly,” as fighter jets unleashed a massive
bombing of the Gaza Strip” (Middle East Eye).
A complete
blockade of the Gaza Strip was initiated on October 9, 2023 consisting
in preventing and obstructing the importation of
food, water, fuel, and essential commodities to 2.3 Million Palestinians.
It’s an outright crime against humanity.
Was “Operation Al-Aqsa Storm” a “surprise attack”? Was it a false
flag?
Netanyahu’s “New Stage” of “The Long War”
against Palestine
Netanyahu’s stated
objective, which constitutes a new stage in the 75 year old war (since Nakba, 1948, see below) against the people of Palestine is no longer predicated on “Apartheid” or
“Separation”. This new stage –which is also directed against Israelis who
want peace– consists in
“total appropriation” as well as the outright exclusion of the
Palestinian people from their homeland.
The current Netanyahu
government is committed to the “Greater Israel” and the “Promised Land”,
namely the biblical homeland of the Jews.

“Hamas issued their own statement about October 7th
& got ignored!”
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=le9V97VPQo8
by Kernow Damo
(13:56)
Our one-sided media prove that point as Israel continues
to get mass coverage, yet Hamas' own statement goes unreported. Right, so it’s
a somewhat obvious oversight in journalistic coverage of the events of October
7th, that nobody had bothered to actually ask Hamas why they did what they did.
Whilst nobody condones the violence they may have shown on the night of October
7th, so many narratives have been weaved in order to, at least at first,
justify the Israeli response, before it became crystal clear it wasn’t
proportionate, it was genocide that was being carried out instead. In light of
that, you’d think that perhaps somebody might try and y’know
talk to Hamas, get their side of the story, interview them about their actions,
their plans and their intentions but no, not a hope, not from our media. In fact
Hamas HAVE released a statement, but that’s too much like effort to pay
attention to as well it’d seem. In fact for this statement to come to my
attention it has come from a Palestinians academic in the West Bank, to a
Palestine activist in this country, who took it to a renowned independent news
site, so it seems only right that their side of the story should be told as
widely as possible, so people can make as informed an opinion having both sides
of the story and whether you’re pro Israel or Pro Palestine, or frankly are
just pro peace and want an end to the atrocities, you can’t argue with the need
to hear from all concerned can you? Right so there is a Hamas statement on what
happened on October 7th and having heard from large swathes of the media what
Israel have said about the events of that night,
versus what has been discovered following investigation, perhaps the Hamas
version of events is well overdue being heard. What a pity none of the media
seem interested! Fortunately, those with an interest in getting this point of
view heard have worked to achieve this. A briefing provided by Hamas, has been
passed along to the UK by Palestinian academic Professor Mazin
Qumsiyeh, who teaches at Bethlehem University in the
West Bank and also runs the Palestinian Museum of Natural History. Having
passed this briefing onto a Palestinian rights activist in the UK, Flavio Centofanti, they have in
turn passed it onto Skwawkbox who have reproduced the
briefing in what is a UK exclusive, sad to say, when surely journalism is about
exposing the truth and that requires viewpoints from both sides of these
atrocities in order to ascertain? No other media have picked this up, it is
impossible for large big budget mainstream news sources to not be aware of this
briefing, so what gives guys? If you aren’t covering something as important as
a key piece to this story, like the version of events of one of the actual
parties involved, then what are you doing? Shaping a narrative, telling us what to think instead, clearly.
We’ve learned a lot in the three months since October 7th,
see if this 10 point response from Hamas and any of the contents thereof ring
any bells with you and use it to formulate your own opinion.

by Germán Gorraiz López
After the consummation of the Brexit, the hypothetical exit of Germany from the Euro
would provoke the liquidation of the Eurozone and the
gestation of a new European economic cartography that will involve the return
to the hermetic economic compartments.
Doctrine
of the “Debt Brake”
As Joel Kotkin points out
in Forbes magazine, for decades “the countries of the North (Germany, Norway,
Sweden, Denmark, Holland, Finland and the United Kingdom) have compensated for
very low fertility rates and declining domestic demand with the arrival of
immigrants and the creation of highly productive export-oriented economies”.
Thus, following the doctrine of the Schuldenbremse
(debt brake) that Germany introduced in its Constitution in 2009 with the
inescapable objective that “every generation pays its expenses and does not
consume the taxes that their children will pay in the form of debt”.
Germany would have achieved successive economic
surpluses in the last five years because the zero or negative interest rates
implemented by the ECB required less money to pay public debt and allowed it to
accumulate reserves to deal with the social crisis COVID-19 with a massive
investment boost estimated at €20 billion to kick-start the
economy.

The US will deploy nuclear weapons to the UK
for the first time in 15 years in a move Russia will view as a provocation, The Telegraph reported, citing Pentagon documents.
READ MORE: Putin’s Nuclear Red Line. Manlio
Dinucci
Pentagon procurement contracts show that
the US is planning to station B61-12 nuclear warheads at RAF Lakenheath, a base in Suffolk, England. The US pulled its nuclear weapons out of
the UK in 2008, and its decision to redeploy them demonstrates the low state of
US-Russia relations.
According to The Telegraph, Russia said a US deployment of nukes to the UK would
be an “escalation” that would require “compensating counter-measures.”
The US already has nukes stationed in Germany,
Belgium, Italy, Turkey, and the Netherlands as part of NATO’s nuclear sharing
program. Last year, Russia announced it was deploying nuclear weapons to
Belarus amid tensions over the proxy war in Ukraine. Russian President
Vladimir Putin pointed to NATO’s nuclear sharing program to justify his
decision.
The B61 is the US’s primary nuclear gravity bomb,
and the B61-12 is its newest iteration. It’s considered a tactical nuclear
weapon, which have a lower yield than strategic warheads. But the B61-12 has a maximum yield of 50 kilotons, more than three times as powerful as
the bomb the US dropped on Hiroshima, Japan.
The UK has a nuclear arsenal of its own and announced in 2021 that it was expanding, raising questions about Britain’s
commitment to the Non-Proliferation Treaty. The UK said it was raising the
ceiling of its nuclear warhead stockpile from 180 to 240 and that it would no
longer publish information about the number of warheads it maintains in an
operational status.

“Scientists Call for Global Moratorium on COVID mRNA
Vaccines, Immediate Removal from Childhood Schedule”
by Dr.
Brenda Baletti
Governments should endorse a global moratorium
on mRNA vaccines until all questions about their safety have been thoroughly
investigated, according to the authors of a new, peer-reviewed article on the COVID-19 vaccine
trials and the global vaccination campaign published last week in Cureus, Journal of Medical Science.
Cureus is a web-based peer-reviewed open-access
general medical journal using prepublication peer review.
The authors surveyed
published research on the pharmaceutical companies’ vaccine trials and related adverse
events. They also called for the COVID-19 vaccines to be removed immediately from
the childhood immunization schedule.
After the first reports from vaccine trials claimed they were 95% effective in preventing COVID-19, serious problems with
method, execution and reporting in the trials became public, which the paper
reviewed in detail.
Evidence also shows the products never underwent
adequate safety and toxicological testing, and since the vaccine rollout,
researchers have identified a significant number of adverse events (AEs) and
serious adverse events (SAEs).
Authors M. Nathaniel Mead, Stephanie Seneff, Ph.D., Russ Wolfinger,
Ph.D., Jessica Rose, Ph.D., Kris Denhaerynck,
Ph.D., Steve Kirsch and Dr. Peter McCullough detailed the vaccines’ potential serious
harms to humans, vaccine control and processing issues, the mechanisms behind
AEs, the immunological reasons for vaccine inefficacy and the mortality data
from the registrational trials.
They concluded, “Federal agency approval of the
COVID-19 mRNA injectable products on a
blanket-coverage population-wide basis had no support from an honest assessment
of all relevant registrational data and commensurate
consideration of risks versus benefits.”
They also called for the vaccines to be immediately
removed from the childhood immunization schedule and for the suspension of the
boosters.
“It is unethical and unconscionable to administer an
experimental vaccine to a child who has a near-zero risk of dying from COVID-19
(IFR, 0.0003%) but a well-established 2.2% risk of permanent heart damage based
on the best prospective data available,” they wrote.
Finally, the authors called for a full investigation
into misconduct by the pharmaceutical companies and the regulatory agencies.
It is the first peer-reviewed study to call for a
moratorium on the COVID-19 mRNA products, Rose told The Defender.
“Once a proper assessment of the safety and efficacy
claims was made herein — upon which the emergency use authorization (EUA)’s and
ultimate final authorizations were granted — it was found that the COVID-19 injectable products were neither safe nor effective,” she added.
According to McCollough,
“mRNA should never have been authorized for human use.”
Lead author Mead told The Defender, “Our view is
that any risk-benefit analysis must consider how much the presumed benefit in
terms of reduced COVID-19 related mortality is offset by the potential increase
in vaccine-induced mortality.”
Here are six takeaways from the review:
1. The
COVID-19 ‘vaccines’ are reclassified gene therapies that were rushed through
the regulatory process in a historically unprecedented manner . . . .

situation in the Middle East, including the Palestinian question, during the
Security Council, 9540th meeting. UN Emergency Relief
Coordinator, Martin Griffiths, said fierce fighting was continuing around the
hospitals in Khan Younis, threatening the wellbeing
of thousands, and driving thousands more south to Rafah.
“Each day that passes only of course deepens the misery and suffering of people
in Gaza and indeed in Israel” The number of people killed in Gaza has
reportedly surpassed 26,000, and those injured reportedly more than 65,000,
according to Gaza’s Ministry of Health. The vast majority are women and
children, he said. Martin Griffiths, Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian
Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator, briefs on the humanitarian situation
in Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territory. He said more than 60 per cent
of housing units have been destroyed or damaged, with some 75 per cent of the
total population of Gaza displaced. "Clean water is almost completely
inaccessible". Any persons displaced from Gaza must be guaranteed the right
to voluntarily return, as international law demands, he said.

Hamas Document Reveals: “Why We Carried Out Al-Aqsa Flood Operation”
https://www.blackagendareport.com/hamas-document-reveals-why-we-carried-out-al-aqsa-flood-operation
The Palestinian Resistance Movement Hamas
issued a 16-page document on Sunday, entitled ‘Our Narrative … Operation Al-Aqsa Flood’. The document addresses many critical questions
about the context, the timing, and the events of October 7.
Originally published in Palestine
Chronicle .
The document (PDF ) was released in both the Arabic and
English languages by the Hamas Media Office. It offers a rare insight into the
reasons that led the Palestinian Resistance leaders to carry out a major
Resistance operation on October 7, in addition to what actually transpired on
that day.
The document starts by addressing “Our steadfast
Palestinian people,” who have been subjected to a genocidal Israeli military
campaign, which is, as of today, at its 107th day.
“In light of the ongoing Israeli aggression on the
Gaza Strip and the West Bank, and as our people continue their battle for
independence, dignity, and breaking-free from the longest-ever occupation
during which they have drawn the finest displays of bravery and heroism in
confronting the Israeli murder machine and aggression,” the introduction of the
document reads.
The other target audiences are “The Arab &
Islamic nations” and “The free peoples worldwide and those who advocate for
freedom, justice and human dignity”.
Why
Operation Al-Aqsa Flood?
The first section is entirely dedicated to the
reasons behind Operation Al-Aqsa Flood.
Hamas contextualizes the events by describing the
brutal colonization process launched by the Zionist movement and even before,
by the British colonial authorities.
“Over these long decades, the Palestinian people
suffered all forms of oppression, injustice, expropriation of their fundamental
rights and the apartheid policies,” the document reads.
The paper also lists official figures related to the
period between 2000 and 2023, revealing shocking numbers of Palestinians killed
and injured.
Hamas also blames the so-called ‘peaceful settlement
process’ and the obstinacy by the US administration and its western allies that
“have always been treating Israel as a state above the law; they provide it
with the needed cover to maintain prolonging the occupation and cracking down
the Palestinian people, and also allowing ‘Israel’ to exploit such situation to
expropriate further Palestinian lands and to Judaize
their sanctities and holy sites.”
“After 75 years of relentless occupation and
suffering, and after failing all initiatives for liberation and return to our
people, and also after the disastrous results of the so-called peace process,
what did the world expect from the Palestinian people to do?” the document asks.
The
Events
The second section, entitled ‘The events of
Operation Al-Aqsa Flood’, describes the events of
that day and debunks some of the Israeli lies. . . . .

“US-NATO Largest War Exercise Against
Russia. “It Will Also Be Nuclear”. Italy on the Front Line”
by Manlio Dinucci
US
Army General Christopher Cavoli, Supreme Allied
Commander in Europe, announced that the largest NATO exercise in decades,
Steadfast Defender 2024, will occur in Europe from the end of January to the
end of May. 90,000 soldiers from the 31 NATO countries will participate and are
about to join NATO Sweden. Over 80 combat aircraft along with helicopters and
drones, 50 warships including aircraft carriers, 1,100 tanks, and other combat
vehicles will be used in the exercise. The exercise — the largest since the end
of the Cold War — will test and refine the war strategy against Russia.
READ
MORE: Ukraine: An “Afghanistan” in the Heart of Europe
European countries of the Alliance in NATO declared
that, with the Steadfast Defender 2024
“the Alliance will
demonstrate its ability to strengthen the Euro-Atlantic area through the
transatlantic movement of forces from North America. This reinforcement will
occur during a simulated emergent conflict scenario against a near-peer
adversary.”
The reference to Russia is
clear.
The Supreme Allied Commander
in Europe also announced that Italy had been chosen as the headquarters of the
Allied Reaction Force. The US general underlined that it is “a fundamental component of our new force
model and that it is capable of carrying out the entire spectrum of missions
and serves as a rapidly deployable strategic reserve”.
During the exercise, the
Italian headquarters of the Allied Reaction Force will carry out a deployment
of the Rapid Reaction Force in
Poland on the eastern flank of the Alliance, clearly directed against Russia.
The Supreme Allied Commander in Europe did not say
that the war exercise, taking place for four months in Europe, would also be
nuclear. The aircraft, ships, and missile systems deployed
in the Steadfast Defender 2024
have dual conventional and nuclear capabilities. The USA will thus be able to
test in a realistic simulation the new nuclear weapons that they are deploying
in Europe increasingly close to Russia.

“As Hawks Urge Biden to Bomb Iran, Barbara Lee Says
Reject Push for Wider War”
by Brett Wilkins
As U.S. hawks clamor for a war on Iran following this week’s deadly
drone strike on American troops in Jordan, Democratic California
Congresswoman Barbara Lee, who is running for
Senate, on Tuesday
urged President Joe Biden to “reject the calls from some in Washington to
increase the fighting.”
Both Republicans and Democrats in Congress are
demanding a U.S. attack on Iran in retaliation for Sunday’s drone strike on the
Tower 22 outpost in northeastern Jordan that killed three soldiers serving in the Army Reserve’s
718th Engineer Company and wounded dozens more, Common Dreams reported Monday.
As Biden announced Tuesday
that he’s decided how the U.S. will respond to the attack, Lee urged restraint.
“I am
heartbroken by the loss of the three American service members killed in Jordan…
These attacks make clear that Iran is taking advantage of the chaos triggered
by the October 7 attacks,” she said in a statement, referring
to the Hamas-led assault on Israel.
“The war in
Gaza has created a firestorm in the Middle East,” Lee added.

“Dangerous
Crossroads: Is U.K. at War with Russia? British Now Know the Danger. But Still
No Peace Party. U.S. Stationing Nuclear Weapons in
U.K.?”
by Rodney Atkinson
In a letter
to my MP (in answer to my question) the UK Department of Defence
could not confirm that the UK was at war with Russia.
But in
international law war is recognised as existing
between two countries if there is a condition marked by armed conflict between
or among states, whether or not war has been declared formally by any of the
belligerents.
This is
unquestionably the case between the UK and Russia with the British public
slowly recognising the fact, having been jolted by
the recent words of General Sir Patrick Sanders who said the UK should
be prepared to “mobilise the nation” because the
armed forces are too weak to resist Russia.
Even more
devastating was the announcement that the United States plans to station
nuclear weapons in Britain for the first time in 15 years according to Pentagon
documents obtained by The Daily
Telegraph. The US removed nuclear missiles from Britain in 2008.
Contracts for a new facility at RAF Lakenheath in
Suffolk confirmed the US intention.
Having hung
onto the coat tails of the US neocons’ plan to
destroy Russia through Ukraine, Britain now finds itself with Armed forces of
184,865 against Russia’s 1.3m and an army of 73,000 which would (at Ukraine’s
rate of losses against Russia) be wiped out in 4 months!
Given the
extremely dangerous 2020 change by Biden on the FIRST use of nuclear weapons
(see this) against
“competitors that could inflict strategic-level damage” it is worth recording
that the UK has a mere 225 nuclear warheads as against Russia’s 5,900.
The Royal Airforce has 564 fixed wing aircraft while Russia has 3,864
and in Ukraine Russia has developed the most sophisticated Drone operations and
electronic warfare in the world.
The UK
Attacks on Russia Through Ukraine
During the
longstanding civil war between Kiev and the Ukrainian Russians in the Donbas it
was the British armed forces who led the training and arming off Kiev’s forces
(including openly Nazi groups like Azov). The Ukrainian Major General Alexei
Taran, responsible for the training programme declared that
Great Britain
has become the “undisputed leader” in organizing the training of the Armed
Forces of Ukraine – it has trained over 30,000 military personnel since the
beginning of the Russian attack, and another 20 thousand from 2014 to 2022.

SHOCKWAVES on ISRAEL vs PALESTINE: What's Next?”

In the global
arena, as nations engage in conflicts, concerns persist about whether this
could be the prophesied Armageddon. Israel's acknowledgment of possessing
nuclear capabilities raises the pressing query of how many other nations have
the capacity to initiate a nuclear war. Despite the worldwide threat posed by
nuclear weapons, certain countries continue to endorse their use. In this
installment of LUMUMBA Explains, the focus shifts to the Israel vs Palestine conflict, exploring its origins, the potential
for a two-state solution, and the intricate issues arising from the ongoing
war. Additionally, the Suez Canal crisis, emanating from the Israel vs Palestine conflict, jeopardizes international maritime
business. South Africa has taken legal action against Israel at the
International Court of Justice (ICJ), accusing them of genocide in Gaza. The
outcome of these proceedings remains uncertain. Recently, the U.S. launched a
series of cruise missiles against the Houthi movement
in Yemen. Lumumba analyzes the repercussions of these attacks and speculates on
potential outcomes.

“Yemen’s Houthis
Speak to MintPress About US
Attacks, Their Blockade of Israel”
by Mnar Adley
(23:07)
The United
States and the United Kingdom recently carried out their eighth round of
strikes against targets in Yemen that they claim are being used by Yemen’s Ansar Allah – known in the West as the Houthis
– to threaten maritime navigation in the Red Sea.
Since Israel
began its deadly incursion into Gaza on October 7 of last year, Ansar Allah has carried out a de facto campaign of targeted
sanctions against Israeli economic interests, attacking ships traveling through
the Red Sea that it says are tied to Israel. The operation stands out in the
region, as neighboring Arab countries have largely stayed out of the fray, if
not directly supported Israel’s bloody campaign.
While Ansar Allah has been much discussed (or, more accurately,
denounced) in Western media, they have rarely been allowed to talk for
themselves. Joining the MintCast today to discuss the
blockade and Yemen’s escalating tensions with the United States is Mohammed al-Bukhaiti, a senior political official and spokesperson for Ansar Allah. Bukhaiti has held
his position since 2014, when the failed U.S.-backed Saudi campaign to dislodge
Ansar Allah from power began.
The human
cost of the U.S.-Saudi campaign has been enormous. More than 400,000 people are
thought to have been killed, and tens of millions of people lost their access
to food, shelter and medical treatment in what the United Nations consistently
called “the world’s worst humanitarian crisis.” A 2021 MintPress investigation found
that the United States had supplied Saudi Arabia with at least $28.4 billion
worth of weapons and provided diplomatic support for the onslaught.
Ansar Allah officials have repeatedly stated that the goal of
their blockade is to pressure Israel into halting its assault on the besieged
Gaza Strip, a deadly campaign that has claimed the lives of well over 25,000
people and has left over 63,000 injured, most of them women and children.
Ansar Allah says that their blockade against Israeli interests
is working, and indeed, major ocean carriers have suspended Red Sea and Suez
Canal transport, instead sailing around Africa, creating significant delays and
supply bottlenecks and costing the Israeli economy billions.
When asked by
reporters if U.S. strikes on Yemen were effective, President Biden responded
by stating: “When you
say ‘working,’ are they stopping the Houthis? No. Are
they going to continue? Yes.” Biden is now the fourth successive American
president to bomb Yemen, a country of 33 million people.

“China
Ignores US Entreaties of Mediation”
https://www.globalresearch.ca/china-ignores-us-entreaties-mediation/5848157
by M. K. Bhadrakumar
There is an
old proverb that when misfortunes come, they come in battalions. Coming on top
of reports of American soldiers going down
like nine-pins on a drone strike against the super secret CIA station for
intelligence and covert operations on the Syrian-Jordanian border, ’nyet’ is the word from Beijing to the Biden
administration’s entreaties seeking intervention with Tehran to rein in the Houthis of Yemen, against the foreboding backdrop of the
Axis of Resistance expanding its operations against American and Israeli
interests.
President
Biden deputed his National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan to handle this
highly delicate mission with Beijing, instead of the US’s top diplomat Antony
Blinken. Sullivan is uniquely placed to switch
roles between the US’ domestic and foreign policies. He is a trusted hatchet
man of the president and is actively involved in Biden’s re-election
campaign.
Sullivan
stayed overnight in Thailand On Friday/Saturday to
launch his charm offensive vis-a-vis
Foreign Minister Wang Yi. But he came away with no sign that China is
willing to use its influence with Tehran.
Later, an unattributable media
briefing by a senior NSC official via
teleconference was hastily arranged by the White House to cover Sullivan’s back
side. It brought home that reading the Chinese tea leaves is an art in itself.
As the NSC official put it,
“Beijing says
they are raising this with the Iranians … but we’re certainly going to wait
before we comment further on how effectively we think they’re actually raising
it.”
Sullivan
seems to have hit a brick wall. This is curious because the Biden
Administration should have learnt from previous experience with Beijing in
trying to prod China to convince close ally North Korea to scale back its
nuclear weapons programme or roll back its “no
limits” friendship with Russia over Ukraine.
Actually,
South Korea’s military said on Sunday that North Korea fired several cruise
missiles, extending a streak in weapons tests that are worsening tensions with
the US and reflecting Pyongyang’s efforts to expand its arsenal of weapons
designed to overwhelm remote US targets in the Pacific, including Guam!
Evidently,
the Biden administration failed to comprehend that Beijing was under no
obligation to use its influence on Pyongyang for serving American interests. It
is sheer naïveté to expect Beijing to fall for selective engagement on issues
that aim to buy time for the president to give his best shot in the upcoming November
elections.
READ MORE: Biden
Bullies China. But It Won’t Work
What does China get in return? The
question doesn’t occur to the Biden Administration. The assumption in DC is
that China is on an ego trip and begging for selective engagement with the No 1
military and economic power on the planet. On the contrary, China too has some
legitimate demands to make — such as, for instance, the US not inciting Taiwan
surreptitiously to travel on the path of independence, or allowing China a
level playing field for setting new technology standards at the global level as
an innovative country.
Interestingly, compared to the
taciturn readout
by the White House on the Sullivan-Wang Yi meeting in
Thailand, the Chinese Foreign Ministry issued a candid full-bodied statement on
Saturday to set the record straight and pre-empt the spin doctors in the Biden
White House from scripting some false narrative. The relevant excerpts from the
Chinese statement titled Wang Yi held a meeting with Sullivan,
assistant to the President of the United States for National Security Affairs are reproduced below:. . . .

“Towards a
New International Monetary System”
https://www.globalresearch.ca/towards-new-international-monetary-system/5848233
by Peter Koenig
Background and Introduction
This
relatively lengthy introduction is deemed necessary to understand how we got to
where we are today; to grasp the long-term western (US) plan to dominate the
world economy with their currency, the US dollar, to which some 23 years ago
the US-dollar’s cousin, the Euro, was added, with the same “zero-backing” base.
*
The current
western (US) made International Monetary System (IMS) has been plagued by
unfairness since the beginning, when it was created through the so-called
Federal Reserve Act (FRA), signed by US President Woodrow Wilson on
December 23, 1913.
The FRA
supposedly provided the US Government with the means to control inflation, and
most importantly, it brought about the internationalization of the US-dollar as
a global currency. Meaning, the US dollar could be used internationally as a
trading currency, which de facto,
made it into an international reserve currency. As such, it was increasingly
used by countries around the world as a major reserve currency, allowing, or
“necessitating” Washington to increase their money supply.
In 1834,
the United States fixed the price of gold at $20.67 per ounce, where it remained until 1933. Other
major countries joined the gold standard in the 1870s. The period from 1880 to
1914 is known as the classical gold standard. During that time, most countries
adhered (to varying degrees) to gold.
The law
required the Federal Reserve to hold gold equal to 40 percent of the value
of the currency it issued, i.e. the US dollar, and to convert those dollars
into gold at a fixed price of $20.67 per ounce of pure gold.
The Federal
Reserve Act of 1913 effectively created the Federal Reserve Bank called “The
Fed”.
For purposes
of (US) “financial stability” and adjustment to “varying international economic
situations” the FRA also allowed The
Fed to issue interest rates as guiding instruments for the US banking
system, and de facto ever more
for the international banking system, as The
FED also internationalized the US dollar, especially for trade, so that
gradually countries trading in US dollars were dollarized, to differing degrees. Trading in US dollars, no
matter between what countries, became an unwritten rule.
This meant on
average and over time, more than 90% of international reserves were held in
gold and US dollars, thereby ever-more increasing their economies’ dependence
on the US – or the US currency.
This also
meant that the US could print dollars ever more indiscriminately – without
backing – as the world depended ever-more on the US dollar for trade and
national reserves.
When in July
1944 the Bretton Woods (BW) Conference not only
created the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank, but also a
new Gold Standard, the US, organizer and effective “owner” of the BW Conference
and its results, in a clever move, “convinced” the participating delegates of
44 nations to accept that the new Gold Standard – 1 troy ounce (about 31.1
grams) would be pegged to the US dollar.
Instead of
fixing the value of gold according to the weighed
average of the 5 or 6 key currencies emerging after WWII – applying the SDR
principle – the gold rate was fixed at US$ 35 / per troy ounce (t-oz); the gold value used for backing the
currencies of the BW-participating nations was expressed in US dollars.
This meant
that de facto gold was replaceable by the US dollar.
The US also were and still are in full control of the IMF and the World
Bank with a veto power. The US being the largest shareholder with a 16.5%
share, effectively giving it veto power, since major decisions need 85% for
approval.
This total
control over the IMF and the World Bank is also the reason why China is vastly
underrepresented in both the IMF and the World Bank. China is the second
largest economy in absolute GDP terms, and the world’s largest economy in
Purchasing Power Parity, or PPP-terms – see below.
The US
administration needs congressional approval for any IMF quota reform. It took
the government years to get Congress to put its stamp on the 2010 reform that
increased China’s voting at the expense of European countries, but NOT at the
expense of the US.
Similarly,
only in October 2016, was the Chinese Yuan (RMB) accepted to join the IMF’s
basket of Special Drawing Rights (SDR). In May 2022 was the currency weight in
the SDR “adjusted” for the US-dollar to currently 43.38% from 41.73% and the yuan to 12.28% from 10.92%. The euro’s weighting declined
to 29.31% from 30.93%, the yen’s fell to 7.59% from 8.33% and the British pound
fell to 7.44% from 8.09%.
There is no
doubt, comparing the Chinese economy with that of the US and Europe, that the
Yuan is way undervalued. A more just valuation / weighing of the Yuan in the
SDR currency basket (US$, Euro, Chinese Yuan, UK pound, Japanese yen) – is of
high priority.
U.S. Abandons
the Gold Standard . . . .

(47:50)
Israel's
status as a bona fide democracy is often taken to be a self-evident truth, but
a more critical look at the history and reality of Zionism calls this into
question. After all, how can a democracy exist in a country constitutionally
defined as an ethnostate that can only exist through
the suppression and gradual elimination of its Others?
Israeli historian Ilan Pappé
joins The Chris Hedges Report for a discussion on Israel as an inherently
colonial, and therefore anti-democratic, project. Ilan
Pappé is a professor with the College of Social
Sciences and International Studies at the University of Exeter in the UK, where
he directs the European Centre for Palestine Studies, and co-directs the Exeter
Centre for Ethno-Political Studies. Prior to coming to the UK, Pappé was a historian and politician in Israel. He is the
author of several books, including The Ethnic Cleansing of Palestine.

“Testimonies
Describe Forced Displacement Campaign in Northern Gaza”
by Tareq S. Hajjaj
Meters away
from Egypt’s border with the city of Rafah in
southern Gaza stands Mahmoud Ahmad, whose real name
has been altered at his request. Mahmoud
asks passers-by about a place where he can find shelter for himself and his
family, who were recently displaced from Gaza City. With a yellowed face and a
hesitant voice emanating from his frail body, the weary-eyed young man tells me
how his family of six arrived in Rafah on foot.
Mahmoud’s testimony is a direct refutation of the Israeli
propaganda claims that the army is not forcibly displacing people from their
homes. Mahmoud and his family live west of Gaza City
near the Ansar area, where the Israeli army invaded
last week. They had originally sought refuge at a shelter east of Gaza City in
the Daraj neighborhood, but after the withdrawal of
the Israeli army from Western Gaza, they returned to their home there. In Gaza,
the Israeli army calls inhabitants according to their area of residence.

“Cobalt Red,
How the Blood of the Congo Powers Our Lives”
https://www.blackagendareport.com/cobalt-red-how-blood-congo-powers-our-lives
by Ann Garrison
“Unspeakable
riches have brought the people of the Congo little other than unspeakable
pain.” So writes Siddharth Kara in Cobalt
Red, How the Blood of the Congo Powers Our Lives . It’s one of
the many poetic phrases that make this book easy on the ear but hard on the
heart and mind. There’s pleasure in turning the pages of such finely crafted
prose, pain in knowing that, if you have half a heart, you’ll never be able to
see your smartphone, laptop, tablet, solar power
system, or electric car quite the same way again, that you’ll see blood all
over the supply chain that put them in your hand, on your roof, or in your
driveway. Despite such privilege, you might even ask yourself how you can stand
to live in such an evil, brutally predatory world for one more day. I did, but
I read on and highly recommend this book despite that shaky moment.
It’s better
to know that, as Kara writes, “The ongoing exploitation of the poorest people
of the Congo by the rich and powerful invades the purported moral foundation of
contemporary civilization and drags humanity back to a time when the people of
Africa were valued only by their replacement cost.”
Kara not only
crafts a fine sentence, but also surrounds his subject—artisanal cobalt mining
in the Democratic Republic of the Congo—with broad historical and economic
context. He recounts the discovery of the Congo and the waves of exploitation
and predation to claim its vast resource wealth, driven by successive
technological revolutions, none of which have left anything for the Congolese
people aside from comprador and kleptocratic elites.
He explains
battery technology and the global dominance of battery manufacture by South
Korean, Japanese, and, most of all, Chinese industrial titans. Huge Chinese
corporations so dominate Congolese cobalt mining, processing and battery
manufacture that one has to ask why a communist government, however capitalist
in fact, doesn’t at least somehow require more responsible sourcing of minerals
processed and then advanced along the supply chain within its borders. I hope
that Kara’s book has or will be translated into Chinese.
That’s not to
say that Kara even remotely exonerates the West. Equally predatory Western
industrial titans sold cobalt mines to their Chinese counterparts, in one
significant instance brokered by none other than Hunter
Biden .

“New
Hampshire: We Won’t Send Our Soldiers to Unauthorized Wars”
https://www.globalresearch.ca/new-hampshire-we-wont-send-soldiers-unauthorized-wars/5848051
by Tom Mannion
From Eastern
Europe to East Asia to across the Middle East, the United States is currently
positioned on multiple tripwires that could pull our country into a new war the
American people do not want.
In 2024,
it’ll be more important than ever that Washington adheres to sound American
principles, the most fundamental of which is the consent of the governed.
The United
States Constitution is clear and concise: “The Congress shall have Power…To
declare War.” That authority does not belong to the president
(no matter their party), or the generals, or some unelected committee of
unknown, faceless bureaucrats. Only the people’s elected representatives
assembled in the U.S. Congress can decide whether to bring our nation from a
state of peace into a state of war.
And yet, since
World War II, their duty has been usurped by the executive branch in the form
of the intelligence “community,” the military-industrial complex, and the White
House.
According to
the Costs
of War Project at Brown University, since Joe
Biden’s inauguration, American soldiers have been in combat and under enemy
fire in eight countries: Afghanistan (prior to Biden’s delayed withdrawal),
Iraq, Syria, Mali, Kenya, Somalia, Yemen, and the United Arab Emirates.
NATO
Doesn’t Supersede the U.S. Constitution. “As our government continues to
stumble towards World War III”
The Global
War on Terror has proven that without the support of the citizenry, expressed
through their elected representatives, our country cannot continue these
endless wars across the globe.
Like most
Americans, my constituents in New Hampshire’s Hillsborough District 1 are tired
of forever war and permanent overseas occupation. They have no further
tolerance for the expenditure of their money, their blood, or their honor in
places like Iraq, where I deployed twice as a Marine Corps rifleman.
With a
motivation to restore the Founding Fathers’ intended separation of powers, I
cosponsored H.B.
229, the Defend the Guard Act, in the state legislature.
This bill would prohibit the deployment of the New Hampshire National Guard
into combat overseas unless Congress has first voted to declare war. Last week,
with bipartisan
support from both conservatives and progressives, H.B. 229
passed the New Hampshire House of Representatives in an
187-182 vote.
This bill,
which is only an added enforcement mechanism to Article I, Section 8 of the
Constitution, drew active opposition. In other states where this legislation
has been introduced, lawmakers have been made to feel intimidated by men in
uniform, mainly senior officials from the Department of Defense who lobbied
aggressively against it. The threats are always the same; don’t rock the boat,
or else.
But our
soldiers deserve better than complacency. Defend the Guard will not prevent our
National Guard units from participating in overseas training in places like El
Salvador — with which New Hampshire has a State Partnership Program — or from
fulfilling their domestic tasks like disaster relief in other states. It will
only ensure that New Hampshire’s National Guardsmen are only sent to fight wars
that their representatives have voted for. Isn’t that how our republic is meant
to work?
For all the
opposition’s big talk, they were drowned out by the immense grassroots backing
for the Defend the Guard Act. I know that many of my colleagues’ phones blew up
with calls from constituents informing them that they should support this
common sense fix to our broken foreign policy.
I’m
incredibly proud of the gratitude I’ve received from Granite Staters for championing this legislation, and for the help
of fellow co-sponsors John Potucek, Michael Granger,
and Matthew Santonastaso — all of us veterans.
H.B. 229 will
now move to the state Senate. Furthermore, more than half the states in the union
will have Defend the Guard legislation introduced in
their legislative bodies in 2024. In March 2023 the Arizona Senate became the
first legislative body to pass this bill.
This measure
could potentially keep our National Guardsmen out of an unconstitutional war.
Their lives are worth that effort, and our Constitution is worth saving.

“America's
"Cultural Matrix" Is Severely Damaged. Political and Academic
Corruption, Laxity of Performance, Professional Integrity...”
by Stephen Karganovic
Swiss
philosopher Henri-Frédéric Amiel’s famous
description of the spirit of what we call today the Collective West, “le culte de la chose bien faite,” sounds sadly hollow nowadays.
Once upon a time, Amiel’s words referred to a
palpable, vibrant, reality. In countries associated with the civilisation of the West, and as noted by Weber in
particular where the Protestant ethic prevailed, doing things right and
efficiently used to be a fanatical cult, just as Amiel
observed. The beneficial results, especially by comparison to the performance
of civilisations and cultures rooted in different
principles, were plainly visible and indisputable.
Amiel lived in the nineteenth century.
There is a contemporary French philosopher, Emmanuel Todd, who has noted
processes that are markedly different. He has the reputation of a prescient
analyst and uncanny forecaster. His recently published book, “The
Defeat of the West,” will unsettle many. Its tenor is in
sharp contrast to Amiel’s self-confident and
optimistic view that the West has got the winning combination with its defining
characteristic of “doing things right.” According to Emmanuel Todd, the West no
longer retains its perfectionist edge. Its fundamental task now is merely to
avert the impending downfall, if it still can. As Todd cogently argues, the
West has not only passed its “active stage,” which is reflected in Henri-Frédéric
Amiel’s cited remark, but also the ensuing civilisation-on-auto-pilot “zombie stage”. It now finds
itself in the terminal “stage zero,” the religious mainsprings whence its civilisation drew its vitality being completely sapped. In
the West, there
is no longer a cult of efficiency and perfection capable of nurturing and
sustaining a corresponding cultural articulation.
The implications
of such a view, if correct, are monumental.
As encapsulated in Curzio Malaparte’s
deliberately chosen raw Germanic expression, that
would mean that the once fabled West has gone kaputt.
Todd has an enviable track record. In the mid-1970s he published a
remarkable and at the time incredible volume, “The Final Fall,” where he
predicted the collapse of the Soviet Union. This writer’s reaction to Todd’s
arguments when they were put forward 40 years ago was deeply sceptical; they were enticing, yet also seemed unrealistic.
To most contemporaries, the
Soviet Union appeared to be an unshakable, enduring reality. Todd’s
meticulous analysis of Soviet demographic data in support of his thesis was
impressive, but seemed unconvincing as a cause capable of producing an effect
of such magnitude. Few could imagine then that barely a decade later processes
would commence that eventually led to precisely the outcome that Todd had
predicted.
It would be unforgivably simplistic to attribute the implosion of the
Soviet Union mainly to unfavourable demographics.
That was a complex operation in which a multitude of factors played a role. But
the virtue of the diagnostic investigation conducted 40 years ago by Emmanuel
Todd was that he demonstrated how seemingly minor yet tell-tale signs could
point to undercurrents and important processes that unjustifiably may have been
overlooked.
And indeed, it is in the West now that tell-tale indications of disarray
are increasingly emerging, to the consternation of those who have eyes to see
and historical perspective to make comparisons. These signs point to a variety
of breakdowns, only some of which are purely mechanical. They appear mostly to
be cultural in essence, and therein lies the danger. A
few recent random examples will serve to make the point.
Exhibit A: Political corruption . .

“Tone Deaf? Biden Administration Brags About 55%
Hike in Foreign Arms Sales”
by William D. Hartung
The State
Department wants you to know that the Biden administration made a record value
of major arms sales last year – $80.9 billion under the U.S.
government-administered Foreign Military Sales program and related “security
cooperation activities” with U.S. allies.
This is a 55%
increase in this category of weapons transfers from the prior year, and, according
to the State Department, “the highest annual total of sales
and assistance provided to our allies and partners.”
There is some question as to whether major weapons transfers are actually
at their highest levels ever. The Obama administration entered
into $102 billion in Foreign Military Sales agreements in
2010, including $60 billion in deals with Saudi Arabia, many of them for
weapons that were later used in Riyadh’s brutal war in Yemen.
But the fact that the State Department wants to brag about “record” sales
is instructive. The rest of the fact
sheet announcing the new figures makes it sound like recent
U.S. arms sales will only have positive outcomes: no risks, no downsides.
Boilerplate language on the benefits of runaway arms trading included the
following:
READ MORE: There’s
No Business Like the Arms Business. Weapons “R” Us
(But You’d Never Know It)
“Each
proposed transfer is carefully assessed on a case-by-case basis, in accordance
with the Arms Export Control Act and related legislation . . . Major defense
transfers are also subject to Congressional notification and review.” In other
words, what could possibly go wrong?
Some
transfers — like the tens of billions in arms supplied to Ukraine to defend
itself from a Russian invasion — have a legitimate rationale, as long as they
are not the only expression of U.S. policy, to the exclusion of exploring
diplomatic approaches to ending the conflict on terms the Ukrainian government
and people can agree to.
And a
substantial portion of the rest of U.S. arms transfers in 2023 went to European
allies concerned about possible future actions by Russia, which may be a
distant prospect given Moscow’s mixed record in fighting a far less populous
nation in Ukraine. It’s not clear that the Russian military is in any shape to
take on the 31-member NATO alliance. Nonetheless, sales made with Russia in
mind included over $30 billion in deals with Poland, $8 billion worth of
military helicopters to Germany, and $5.6 billion in F-35 combat aircraft to
the Czech Republic.

the U.S. saw a dramatic rise in Islamophobic hate
during the final three months of 2023.
In line with
data released last

similar three-month period the previous year.
The highest
reported categories last quarter were employment discrimination (19%), hate
crimes and incidents (13%), and education discrimination (13%), according to
CAIR, which plans to release a full analysis and dataset in the months ahead.
Victims of
high-profile incidents have included six-year-old Wadea

“Silencing
the Messenger: How Power Creates and Entrenches Health Inequities”
by Rupa Marya,
MD
I am a
professor of medicine at the University of California, San Francisco, where I
have been working for more than 20 years to address the health impacts of
racism in medicine and society at large. For six weeks, I was in almost daily contact with Dr Ghassan Abu Sitta, a
Palestinian British surgeon who was communicating about Israel’s destruction of
Gaza’s healthcare system from the operating
room of Al-Shifa hospital as it unfolded. He also
gave testimony of this at the Hague to the
International Court of Justice, which is pursuing the concern about Israel’s
genocide against the Palestinian people.
As my life’s
work advancing health justice demands, I spoke up to bring attention to the
extent of what was happening to Israel’s coordinated and catastrophic
destruction of Gaza’s healthcare system. I never expected that my advocacy
to stop
bombing hospitals and my criticism of Israel for those
actions would elicit harassing racist attacks against me. Much to my dismay, my
own institution participated in the online harassment.
On Jan. 2, I
wrote a
social media post inquiring into how Zionism as
an ideology of supremacy in medicine impacts health and healthcare access for
people of color. California State Senator Scott Wiener reposted it, misrepresenting
my views as antisemitic and
naming me and my employer as UCSF. An account associated with the Canary
Mission shared it, sending their trolls after me.
Canary
Mission is an organization with ties to Israel that runs campaigns to harass
and destroy the careers of students and faculty in the U.S. who criticize
Zionism or Israel. It is funded by U.S. foundations and has been supported
by the Helen Diller Family Foundation, the largest
donor to UCSF. This is the second time I have been
targeted by a pro-Israeli group in the past 100 days. The first time was in
November, when I received hate mail through my UCSF account that included
phrases like “kill yourself you retarded grifting n*gger,” “Jew baiting c*nt,”
and “White people are the greatest people on Earth. You know this.” I reported
these threats to UCSF leadership.
Despite their
awareness of this harassment, on Jan, 6, UCSF picked up where Wiener left off
and launched a coordinated post across
multiple social medicine platforms, parroting Wiener’s misrepresentation of my
words and framing my inquiry as antisemitic. My
supervisor, Department Chair Bob Wachter, and Vice
Chancellor Catherine Lucey coordinated UCSF’s post at
the same moment, which precipitated more hateful online attacks against me.
While UCSF didn’t name me, the inference was clear, as was the intention — to
silence and discredit me.
Many people
across social media identified me and either called for me to be fired or
denounced UCSF’s action as a racist
attack on a faculty of color who is committed to health equity. A speaking engagement was
canceled due to this flurry of online activity, which is a challenge as the
main breadwinner for my family. Wiener then thanked
UCSF for amplifying his dangerous rhetoric. These
connections between a state senator, a public university, their largest donor
and an Israeli entity are alarming for their impact in a public educational
institution.
I write here
and now to clarify my position for my community, to whom I am accountable and
who deserve to understand my views. We are in a moment where substantive
critique of the Israeli government and the Zionist ideology upon which it was
founded is being cast as antisemitic. When I say
Zionist ideology, I am referring to the ideology of supremacy, apartheid, and ethnonationalism we see in practice in Israel—not an
identity nor Jewish people generally.
When I speak
about its impact in medicine, I situate this inquiry with other systems of
supremacy and their well-documented effects on bodies. I share these thoughts
with deep love of humanity, the web of life and the Earth herself. I share them
with humility, understanding where my words have contributed to
misunderstanding and taking accountability to clarify for the purpose of our
collective evolution of thought and to avoid devolution into hateful rhetoric
or manipulative attempts to silence scholars of color.
When I wrote
“Zionist doctors,” I used a phrase that triggered a trauma response in many
Jewish people and for this I apologize. In my attempt to protect the identities
of physicians who have said and done horrific things, I regrettably used a
phrase that invited comparisons to a Soviet-era racist
trope about Jewish doctors. I can see how that phrasing was
hurtful, and to offer clarification, I will name some of these physicians and
their actions.
I should have
characterized these doctors as “some doctors who espouse Zionist ideologies.”
For clarity, not all doctors
who espouse Zionist ideologies have done and said these things. And I repudiate
all insinuations that I was referring to the many Jewish doctors who are deeply
committed to the service of all, many of whom I am grateful to count among my
valued colleagues and friends. But I will offer examples of people who do
espouse these ideologies and who prompt me to question to what extent this
ideology of supremacy operates in U.S. health systems, and how it may impact
the health outcomes for marginalized people, particularly brown, Black and
Indigenous people.
I have heard
the word Zionism used by my American Jewish friends to signify the right of Jewish people to have a safe place to live without
fear of discrimination. I agree wholeheartedly with this assertion–specifically
for Jewish people who have experienced terrible, long histories of
discrimination and trauma, and also generally, for all people.
What I take
issue with is Zionism in
practice as set forth by the State of Israel, which since its
inception in 1948 has enacted the violent oppression of Palestinian people,
land theft, and depopulation of Palestinian villages. I take issue with the
brutal occupation, the settlements, the
racism, the
abduction of children, apartheid
society and medical
apartheid that Israel has created. I oppose
Israel burning
farms, poisoning
Palestinian wells, pouring
cement into Palestinian agricultural wells and destroying
ancestral olive orchards. I am deeply troubled by over 100
days of unmitigated violence in Gaza that has killed an estimated 23,000
people, almost 400 of them my colleagues in healthcare. I am concerned
about Israel’s
starvation of the residents of Gaza.
Zionism in practice is not some
aberration from some ideologically pure intention. It falls very much in line
with what the founders and leaders of Zionism intended, which is documented and
laid out by the founders of Israel. Zionism as a political movement started in
the early 1880s in Eastern Europe, predating Theodor Herzl and the First
Zionist Conference (1897) and the 20th century calls for the creation of a
Zionist state in Palestine. Founding Zionist thinker Ze’ev Jabotinsky clarified
that Zionism was a settler
colonial project that required “the
transformation of ‘Palestine’ into the ‘Land of Israel.’” As Israel’s
first Prime
Minister Ben-Gurion stated, “If
I were an Arab leader, I would never sign an agreement with Israel. It is
normal; we have taken their country. It is true God promised it to us, but how
could that interest them? Our God is not theirs. There has been Anti-Semitism,
the Nazis, Hitler, Auschwitz, but was that their fault? They see but one thing:
we have come and we have stolen their country. Why would they accept that?”
Albert
Einstein rejected
the offer to become Israel’s first president,
specifically because of the system of supremacy he saw that Israel in practice
would require. He argued for a secularism with equal rights for all, saying
said in a
1938 speech: “I should much rather see
reasonable agreement with the Arabs on the basis of living together in peace
than the creation of a Jewish state … My awareness of the essential nature of
Judaism resists the idea of a Jewish state with borders, an army, and a measure
of temporal power … I am afraid of the inner damage Judaism will sustain.”
When I name
Zionism as a system of supremacy, I am referring to what many Jewish and
Israeli people commonly understand as the practice of Zionism in Israel. As the
young Israeli intellectual Hayim Kastim wrote
before he was tragically killed by Hamas on Oct. 7:

“The Silence
of the Damned”
https://scheerpost.com/2024/01/31/chris-hedges-the-silence-of-the-damned/
by Chris Hedges
Our leading
humanitarian and civic institutions, including major medical institutions,
refuse to denounce Israel’s genocide in Gaza. This exposes their hypocrisy and
complicity.
There is no
effective health
care system left in Gaza. Infants are
dying. Children are having their limbs amputated without
anesthesia. Thousands of cancer patients and those in need of dialysis lack
treatment. The last cancer hospital in Gaza has ceased
functioning. An estimated 50,000 pregnant
women have no safe place to give birth. They undergo
cesarean sections without
anesthesia. Miscarriage rates are
up 300 percent since the Israeli assault began. The wounded bleed to
death. There is no sanitation
or clean water. Hospitals have been bombed and shelled. Nasser Hospital, one of
the last functioning hospitals in Gaza, is “near
collapse.” Clinics, along with ambulances – 79 in
Gaza and over 212 in the West Bank – have been destroyed. Some 400
doctors, nurses, medics and healthcare workers have been killed — more
than the total of all healthcare workers killed in
conflicts around the world combined since 2016. Over 100 more have
been detained, interrogated, beaten and tortured, or
disappeared by Israeli soldiers.
Israeli
soldiers routinely enter hospitals to carry out forced evacuations – on
Wednesday troops entered al-Amal Hospital in Khan
Younis and demanded doctors and displaced Palestinians
leave – as well as round up detainees, including the wounded, sick and medical
staff. On Tuesday, disguised as hospital workers and civilians, Israeli
soldiers entered Jenin’s Ibn
Sina Hospital in the West Bank and assassinated three
Palestinians as they slept.
The cuts to
funding for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in
the Near East (UNRWA) — collective punishment for the alleged
involvement in the Oct. 7 attack of 12 of
its 13,000 UNRWA
workers — will accelerate the horror, turning the attacks,
starvation, lack of health care and spread of infectious diseases in Gaza into
a tidal wave of death.
The
evidence-free charges, which include the accusation that 10 percent of all of
UNRWA’s Gaza staff have ties to Islamist militant groups, appeared in the
Wall Street Journal. The reporter, Carrie-Keller Lynn, served in the Israel
Defense Forces (IDF). Given the numerous lies Israel has employed to justify
its genocide, including “beheaded
babies” and “mass
rape,” it is reasonable to assume this may be another
fabrication.
The
allegations, of which details
remain scant, are apparently based on confessions by
Palestinian detainees — most certainly after being beaten or tortured. These
allegations were enough to see 17 countries including the
U.S., Canada, U.K., Germany, France, Australia and Japan cut or delay funding
to the vital U.N. agency. UNRWA is all that stands between the Palestinians in
Gaza and famine. A handful of countries, including Ireland, Norway and Turkey,
maintain their funding.
Eight of the
UNRWA employees accused of participating in the Oct. 7 attack in southern
Israel, where 1,139 people were killed and 240 abducted, were fired. Two have
been suspended. UNRWA has promised an investigation. They account for 0.04
percent of UNRWA’s staff.
Israel is seeking to destroy not only Gaza’s health care system and
infrastructure, but UNRWA which provides food
and aid to 2 million Palestinians. The object is to make Gaza
uninhabitable and ethnically cleanse the 2.3 million Palestinians in Gaza.
Hundreds of thousands are already starving. Over 70
percent of the housing has been destroyed. More than
26,700 people have been killed and
over 65,600 have been injured. Thousands
are missing. Some 90 percent of Gaza’s pre-war population has been displaced, with many
living in the open. Palestinians have been reduced to
eating grass and drinking contaminated water.

“U.S. Ramps Up War Crimes After ICJ Rules Against Israel”
https://www.blackagendareport.com/us-ramps-war-crimes-after-icj-rules-against-israel
by Margaret Kimberley
The Biden
administration colluded with Israel to slander the United Nations Relief Works
Agency for Palestine in anticipation of the ICJ ruling against Israel on the
charge of genocide. Washington is attempting to cover up genocide by committing
the war crime of collective punishment against the people of Gaza.
On December
29, 2023, the Republic of South Africa charged Israel with violating the United
Nation’s Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide in regards to
its assault on the population of Gaza. On January
26, 2024the International Court of Justice (ICJ) ruled that
claims of genocide against Israel are plausible and that the killing of
Palestinians in Gaza must end. Despite attempts to obfuscate or to claim an
Israeli victory, the meaning of the court ruling could not have been clearer.
The ICJ did not use the word “ceasefire” as many people had hoped, but
judges did say that the killing must stop. The court did not dismiss the case
as Israel asked it to do. All of the parsing in the world cannot dispute the
court’s determination.
The Court considers that, with regard to the situation described above,
Israel must, in accordance with its obligations under the Genocide Convention,
in relation to Palestinians in Gaza, take all measures within its power to
prevent the commission of all acts within the scope of Article II of this
Convention, in particular: (a) killing members of the group; (b) causing
serious bodily or mental harm to members of the group; (c) deliberately
inflicting on the group conditions of life calculated to bring about its
physical destruction in whole or in part; and (d) imposing measures intended to
prevent births within the group. The Court recalls that these acts fall within
the scope of Article II of the Convention when they are committed with the
intent to destroy in whole or in part a group as such (see paragraph 44 above).
The Court further considers that Israel must ensure with immediate effect
that its military forces do not commit any of the above-described acts.
The Court is also of the view that Israel must take all measures within
its power to prevent and punish the direct and public incitement to commit
genocide in relation to members of the Palestinian group in the Gaza Strip.
(Emphasis mine)
Even if one cannot read and understand the ruling, the defeat of Israel
is made even clearer by actions of the United States and its allies. On the
very day that the ICJ issued its ruling, the State
Department announced that the U.S. would
temporarily suspend funding to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency
(UNRWA) because of Israel’s allegation that 12 UNRWA employees participated in
the Hamas military action of October 7. The State Department action was quickly
followed by similar announcements from the UK, Canada, and the European Union,
who followed along like the obedient vassals that they are.
It is
interesting that Secretary of State Antony Blinken
praised the UNRWA after October 7. On November
5, 2023he posted the following on the X social media
platform. “During my visit to Jordan, I spoke with @UNRWA staff in Gaza. I heard about the extraordinary
lifesaving work they are doing in the face of extremely difficult conditions.
We are working to expedite assistance to them so that they can get it to the
Palestinian people.”
By Blinken’s own admission, the absence of U.S. funding
ensures that Palestinians in Gaza will go hungry. The U.S. action is in itself
a war crime. Withholding food and other aid is a form of collective
punishment , in this
case because of the alleged actions of twelve people.

“Sick to
Death: Unhealthy Food and Failed Technologies”
https://off-guardian.org/2024/01/30/sick-to-death-unhealthy-food-and-failed-technologies/
by Colin Todhunter
The world is
experiencing a micronutrient food and health crisis. Micronutrient deficiency
now affects billions of people. Micronutrients are key vitamins and minerals
and deficiencies can cause severe health conditions. They are important for
various functions, including blood clotting, brain development, the immune
system, energy production and bone health, and play a critical role in disease
prevention.
The root of
the crisis is due to an increased reliance on ultra processed foods (‘junk
food’) and the way that modern food crops are grown in terms of the seeds used,
the plants produced, the synthetic inputs required (fertilisers,
pesticides etc) and the effects on soil.
In 2007,
nutritional therapist David Thomas noted
a precipitous change in the USA towards convenience and
pre-prepared foods often devoid of vital micronutrients yet packed with a
cocktail of chemical additives, including colourings,
flavourings and preservatives.
He noted that
between 1940 and 2002 the character, growing methods, preparation, source and
ultimate presentation of basic staples have changed significantly to the extent
that trace elements and micronutrient contents have been severely
depleted. Thomas added that ongoing research clearly demonstrates a
significant relationship between deficiencies in micronutrients and physical
and mental ill health.
Prior to the
Green Revolution, many of the older crops that were displaced carried dramatically
higher counts of nutrients per calorie. For instance, the
iron content of millet is four times that of rice, and oats carry four times
more zinc than wheat. As a result, between 1961 and 2011, the protein, zinc and
iron contents of the world’s directly consumed
cereals declined by 4%, 5% and 19%, respectively.
The authors
of a
2010 paper in the International
Journal of Environmental and Rural Development state that cropping systems
promoted by the Green Revolution have resulted in reduced food-crop diversity
and decreased availability of micronutrients. They note that micronutrient
malnutrition is causing increased rates of cancer, heart disease, stroke,
diabetes and osteoporosis in many developing nations. They add that soils are
increasingly affected by micronutrient disorders.
In 2016,
India’s Central
Soil Water Conservation Research and Training Institute reported
that the country was losing 5,334 million tonnes of
soil every year due to soil erosion because of indiscreet and excessive use of fertilisers, insecticides and pesticides over the
years. On average, 16.4 tonnes of fertile soil
is lost every year per hectare. It concluded that the non-judicious use of
synthetic fertilisers had led to the deterioration of
soil fertility causing loss of micro and macronutrients leading to poor soils
and low yields.
The
high-input, chemical-intensive Green Revolution with its hybrid seeds and
synthetic fertilisers and pesticides helped the drive
towards greater monocropping and has resulted
in less
diverse diets and less
nutritious foods. Its long-term impact has
led to soil degradation and mineral imbalances, which, in turn, have adversely
affected human health.
But
micronutrient depletion is not just due to a displacement of nutrient-dense
staples in the diet or unhealthy soils. Take wheat, for example. Rothamsted Research in the UK has evaluated the mineral
concentration of archived wheat grain and soil samples from the Broadbalk Wheat Experiment. The experiment began in 1843,
and their findings show significant decreasing trends in the concentrations of
zinc, copper, iron and magnesium in wheat grain since the 1960s.
The
researchers say that the concentrations of these four minerals remained stable between 1845
and the mid 1960s but have since decreased significantly by 20-30%. This
coincided with the introduction of Green Revolution semi-dwarf, high-yielding
cultivars. They noted that the concentrations in soil used in the experiment
have either increased or remained stable. So, in this case, soil is not the
issue.

“The
revolution will involve fermented cabbage”
by Edward Slavsquat and Gavin Mounsey
Yes,
it’s true. You are not hallucinating. Your favorite blog-series, “Edward asks
his friends and acquaintances questions”, has returned.
Today’s
interview is with Gavin Mounsey, curator of Recipes for Reciprocity. Gavin is a gardener, seed saver, food fermenter,
stone mason, mushroom cultivator, forager, herbalist, survivalist, permaculture designer, author, and lifelong apprentice to
nature.
Let’s begin!
Gavin, your blog “Recipes for
Reciprocity” is a lovely oasis floating in the
vast cesspool we call the Internet. But why do you insist on writing about the
joys of making sauerkraut, instead of patiently explaining why we should
unconditionally support our benevolent and caring governments? It seems to me
that your preoccupation with fermented cabbage is covertly seditious.
Firstly,
thank you very much for the kind words about my blog.
Maintaining
my island oasis in the turbulent ocean of garbage social engineering Alphabet Corp algorithms , Statist AI troll bots, government sock puppets, fear
propaganda, menticided pop culture addicts, Stockholm syndromed savior seekers and Pfizer commercials is not
always easy, so I am glad that some people can find a little reprieve on its
shores from time to time.
Regarding my seditious sauerkraut educational endeavours, I like to
empower everyday people all over the planet to take back control of their
health and their access to food and I find that low tech (nutrient dense) preserves (which include things like fermented
cabbage) serves both those functions beautifully. That
is why I spent a significant amount of time experimenting with fine tuning such
techniques and broadening their potential via incorporating non-conventional
ingredients and sharing my results.
Being able to take seasonal vegetable
(fruit and herb) abundances (whether they are grown in one’s garden, foraged
from the forest/field or purchased) and not only preserve them (using low tech
tools) but also increase their nutritional value and flavour
through a process like lacto-fermentation liberates an individual from the
infantilizing role of being a “consumer” while simultaneously increasing one’s
health sovereignty.
Therefore you are correct when you
describe the act of making sauerkraut as something that subverts and undermines
the authority of statist governance systems. For each time we take steps to
severe our ties to depending on centralized (government subsidized, toxic
chemical laced and highly processed) food supply infrastructure by growing,
gathering and/or locally purchasing some of it own
fresh food and preserving it we are boycotting big brother and big brother’s
friends in big Ag and big pharma. Whether one
describes that as covert or overt sedition is a matter of perspective but it is
certainly represents a radical and rebellious in today’s world of hyperconsolidated corporate domination of the food supply,
national governments and ‘health care’ systems.
Each jar of sauerkraut
one makes with homegrown produce represents an action that effectively avoids
the taxation often associated with buying food from corporate food sources
(where there are typically 5-7 tax paying middlemen from processing
plants/factories to warehouse storage, to distribution shipping companies,
regional super market storage facilities and then retail grocery stores
in-between you and the farmer who grew the food) and it also represents an
action that maintains your health without the need for the products of big pharma.

Book Review
“The Arabs: A
History”
https://www.palestinechronicle.com/the-arabs-a-history-book-review/
by Jim Miles
(The Arabs – A History. Eugene
Rogan. Basic Books, New York, 2009. Revised
2017.)
While the genocide has raged on in Gaza I have been reading Eugene
Rogan’s large work simply titled The
Arabs – A History.
It is generally well written in an academic textbook manner, a political
outline of the trials and tribulations of the Arab people viewed mostly through
the political-military-financial manipulations of the rulers of the region.
That overlaps fully with the political-military-financial manipulations
of the empires and outside authorities interested in controlling the region for
various reasons.
Themes
The history works at the political level, and to sum it up as succinctly
as possible, presents two main themes. First is
that for much of the time period of the book (starting from the Ottoman control
of the lands in the Sixteenth and Seventeenth Centuries), the Arabs were ruled
by non-Arab authorities, either directly by the Ottoman regime, under the
control of subordinated rulers, or under the control of previous non-Arab
groups contesting with or subordinate to the Ottomans.
The second theme coming through is how much foreign interference has
played in the region, not as just mentioned above but in more recent history
with the military and financial interference and influence of mostly European
empires (Italy, France, and Great Britain) and even more recently, the United
States empire. There have been no effective independent Arab governments
operating within democratic principles. They have tried but have always
been subjugated to foreign influence, dominance, or outright control. . .
