Colleagues and Friends of CEIMSA,
It
seems like a lifetime ago that I was studying history at the University of
Wisconsin-Madison in the late 1960s. We frequently engaged in long discussions
on weighty questions like: Is Thanatos a human instinct like Eros, innate to our species, like the nest-building instinct is for
birds; or is it a culturally acquired human character trait, made visible by
body armor, as Wilhelm Reich argued; and is Class
Consciousness an a priori ideology, as György Lukács
maintained in his classic monograph, History and Class
Consciousness: Studies in Marxist Dialectics (1923), or is it the ipso facto perception and awareness that
E.P. Thompson tried to demonstrate in his classic history, The Making of the English
Working Class (1966).
Today
in the political culture of late capitalism and militarism “The Death Wish”
seems to prevail, and one gets the uncomfortable feeling that the idea of Extinction has become acceptable to an
increasing number of disillusioned people, passively awaiting the inevitable
conclusion of our species.
We
have been told by the Neoconservatives
that the options that existed in the past have been reduced. We have exhausted
the possibilities, or to put it another way, as we approach our destination,
the byways and shortcuts along our route are no longer viable; they constitute
unacceptable deviations from our path. While in the early part of our journey,
they may have been perceived as interesting alternatives and possibly helpful
detours; at this late date, such options are dismissed as useless distractions
which could only hinder the prompt arrival at our destination which stands
clearly before us, at the end of our one-and-only path. It can be seen
in the metaphor of approaching the driveway to your home after driving across
the United States: as you get closer to your destination, the number of viable alternative
byways heading in your general direction is diminished, until there is only one
way to enter into your garage. This is the hegemonic thought of today’s
Neo-conservatism (a.k.a. T.I.N.A.) !
The
desperate and disgusting collapse of Empire with vultures who linger nearby
waiting to pick up the scraps is a spectacle that has caught much attention. A
noteworthy example of this theater of the grotesque is New York Times reporter Thomas Friedman, summing up the
Iraq ‘war’ in a May 29, 2003 television interview with Charlie Rose : “Suck on this!”
The
high-tech killing years are here and will continue, and we can look forward to the post-war
‘mop-ups,’ the continuing destruction of social solidarity in the context of
this chaotic violence, the science of which we have discussed in past CEIMSA bulletins, ON THE LOSS OF CONFIDENCE AND OTHER
DISADVANTAGES.
The
10 items below will remind CEIMSA readers that technocratic control over
our lives from above is a formula for failure, despite any catharsis it might
offer frustrated leaders who find themselves alienated from society, for one
reason or another. Unfortunately, there is no shortage of obedient followers
for such individuals to exploit. Together, they are the self-hating
servant/victim of the ruling class, a class whom they unconditionally admire for the
power and wealth they have provided their masters.

A REMINDER : NEOCON THINK TANKS AND FASCISM “IN THEIR

especially the Southern Hemisphere should be alarmed! Trump is concerning
certain aspects almost an open Fascist (by all means a white Suprematist), but he pretended to end the Influence of the
US (Neocon) Power Elite. Well, the Power Elite almost
ended him. He´d been put „on_track“
pretty soon. The
US Neocon Power Elite is by now as well in control of Trump as it also is in
control of the Democratic Party. For that end they used Clinton as their spearhead in the
Democratic Party. She brought Victoria Nuland (quote: “fuck the EU”)
into the Obama administration. Nuland is the wife of Robert Kagan. Kagan is co-founder of the neoconservative“Project for the New American
Century".

Le temps des funérailles est revenu dans le conflit
israélo-palestinien.
Celui d’un nouveau cycle où la violence se nourrit de la colère de
la
rue et des faiblesses de ceux qui pourraient l’atténuer. Dimanche
23
juillet, trois membres de la famille Salomon ont été portés en terre
à
Modiin, devant une foule nombreuse. Résidents de la colonie
d’Halamish
en Cisjordanie, ils fêtaient deux jours plus tôt la naissance d’un
petit-fils, lorsqu’ils ont été assassinés au couteau pendant le repas
de
shabbat par un Palestinien de 20 ans. Il prétendait agir en défense
de
la mosquée Al-Aqsa.
Dimanche, dans la matinée, un calme irréel régnait sur l’esplanade
des
Mosquées (mont du Temple pour les juifs). Sous le soleil, le vide.
Pas
un fidèle musulman, ni d’employé du Waqf, la fondation pieuse
jordanienne gérant le site. Quelques touristes et des groupes de
juifs
religieux, encadrés par la police. Les lourdes portes d’Al-Aqsa
demeuraient fermées. Au loin, dans Jérusalem, des sirènes. Et dans
l’allée qui conduit en temps normal les croyants de la porte des
Lions
vers l’esplanade des Mosquées, les portiques de détection de métaux
restaient sans emploi.
Messages contradictoires
Depuis leur installation par la police, sans concertation avec le
Waqf,
en réponse à l’assassinat de deux policiers israéliens le 14
juillet,
ces portiques ont concentré la colère des Palestiniens. En
particulier
ceux de Jérusalem-Est. A l’appel des responsables religieux, ils
refusent de se rendre sur le lieu saint tant que les portiques
n’auront
pas été retirés. Ils prient dans la rue. Depuis une semaine, des
affrontements opposent les jeunes à la police autour de la porte
des
Lions, mais aussi à l’entrée des quartiers arabes de la ville.
Aucune
faction ne mène la mobilisation. Al-Aqsa soude les colères et les
frustrations accumulées. Depuis le 21 juillet, cinq Palestiniens ont
été
tués et 825 personnes ont été blessées, dont 26 par balles
réelles,
selon le Croissant-Rouge palestinien.
Les fidèles accusent les Israéliens de vouloir changer le statu quo
qui
régit l’accès et la gestion de l’esplanade des Mosquées. Plus le
temps
passe et plus un compromis semble difficile à trouver. Mahmoud Abbas,
le
président de l’Autorité palestinienne, avait condamné l’attaque
contre
les deux policiers druzes israéliens. Mais la mobilisation de
milliers
de fidèles pour Al-Aqsa l’a placé dos au mur. Dimanche, le « raïs »
a
donc annoncé qu’il rompait tous les contacts avec les Israéliens,
dont
la coordination sécuritaire. Cette menace ancienne, si elle se
concrétisait, serait mutuellement destructrice. « Il est difficile
pour
lui d’abandonner ce canal sans disposer d’une alternative, note un
cadre
du renseignement, à Jérusalem. Or, on ne voit pas du tout de
progrès
dans ledialogue entre le Fatah et le Hamas. »
Mais l’embarras est encore plus grand chez le premier ministre,
Benyamin
Nétanyahou. Reculer, c’est s’affaiblir. Persister, c’est prendre
le
risque d’un embrasement. Le cabinet de sécurité s’est réuni pendant
six
heures, dimanche soir, sans prendre une décision sur les
portiques,
déchiré entre les calculs politiques et la multiplication des
foyers
d’incendie : les points de friction, pour l’heure surtout à
Jérusalem-Est ; la résurgence de la menace, en Cisjordanie, des
attaques
individuelles contre les colons et les soldats ; les répercussions
régionales. Une nouvelle réunion du cabinet était prévue lundi.
M. Nétanyahou n’a établi aucun lien entre l’attaque commise à
Halamish
et la crise des portiques autour de l’esplanade des Mosquées. «
Cela
fait cent ans que nous faisons face à ce terrorisme meurtrier et
que
nous le surmontons », a-t-il déclaré dimanche, en marge d’une
cérémonie
à Jérusalem. Les messages envoyés au cours du week-end ont été
contradictoires. Samedi soir, le coordinateur des activités
gouvernementales dans les territoires palestiniens (COGAT), le
général
Yoav Mordechai, a voulu rassurer le monde arabe en déclarant à
Al-Jazira
que le gouvernement étudiait des « solutions alternatives » aux
portiques.
« Troisième Nakba »
Dans la nuit, des caméras dites intelligentes ont été mises en
place,
près de la porte des Lions. Le porte-parole de la police, Micky
Rosenfeld, n’a pas souhaité préciser au Monde si elles étaient
thermiques ou de reconnaissance faciale. Malgré cette initiative,
les
portiques n’ont pas été retirés. Dans la matinée, les responsables
du
culte musulman ont rejeté tout aménagement. Ils exigent un retour à
la
situation antérieure au 14 juillet. Impossible, estiment les membres
du
cabinet de sécurité israélien. « Comment redescendre de l’arbre » :
la
formule était employée par de nombreux médias au sujet des
protagonistes
de ce bras de fer.
Poussé par la haute hiérarchie de la police, le ministre de la
sécurité
publique, Gilad Erdan, est celui qui a milité en faveur des
portiques,
redoutés par le Shin Bet (service de sécurité intérieur) et l’armée,
en
raison des répliques violentes prévisibles. Dimanche, le ministre
a
affirmé qu’ils resteraient en place tant qu’une solution
alternative
fiable n’aurait pas été trouvée.
Le ministre de la coopération régionale, Tzachi Hanegbi (Likoud),
considéré comme un proche de M. Nétanyahou, a averti : « Nous ne
capitulerons pas. » Interrogé à la télévision, il a estimé que les
Palestiniens allaient causer leur propre malheur en choisissant la
violence, se dirigeant « non pas vers une troisième Intifada, mais
vers
une troisième Nakba ». Cette expression signifiant catastrophe est
utilisée pour décrire la fuite forcée de centaines de milliers de
Palestiniens au moment de la création d’Israël. La deuxième Nakba
à
laquelle le ministre semblait faire référence est la guerre des
Six-Jours (1967) et les conquêtes territoriales de l’Etat hébreu.
M. Nétanyahou conduit le gouvernement le plus à droite de
l’histoire,
dont les cadres sont peu expérimentés en matière de gestion de crise
de
cette ampleur. Depuis le départ en 2016 de son ancien ministre de
la
défense, Moshe Yaalon, il n’y a plus de poids lourd exprimant une
voix
de bon sens. De leur côté, Naftali Bennett et les représentants de
la
droite nationale religieuse considèrent les portiques comme un
gain
précieux de souveraineté sur le mont du Temple. Ils ne
s’embarrassent
pas de détails. Pour eux, ces attaques relèvent uniquement de la
nature
profonde des Palestiniens et de leur haine des juifs, hors de tout
contexte religieux ou politique. Ils ont appelé à l’application de
la
peine de mort pour l’auteur de la tuerie d’Halamish.

Award winner Oliver Stone was able to secure what journalists, news
organisations, and even other world leaders have long coveted: extended,
unprecedented access to Russian President Vladimir Putin.
The Putin Interviews are culled from more than a dozen interviews with
Putin over a two-year span―never before has the Russian leader spoken in
such depth or at such length with a Western interviewer. No topics are off
limits in the interviews, which first occurred during Stone’s trips to meet
with NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden in Moscow and most recently after the
election of President Donald Trump.
Prodded by Stone, Putin discusses relations between the United States
and Russia, allegations of interference in the US election, and Russia’s
involvement with conflicts in Syria, Ukraine, and elsewhere across the globe.
Putin speaks about his rise to power and details his relationships with
Presidents Clinton, George W. Bush, Obama, and Trump. The exchanges are
personal, provocative, and at times surreal. At one point, Stone asks, “Why did
Russia hack the election?”; at another, Stone introduces him to Stanley
