One item of which he was
particularly proud was the "whistling bomb," which fell slowly and
created a loud, shrill noise before it exploded, thus terrorizing the
surrounding area before it exploded on the designated target, taking a specific
number lives.
Another item he gloated over was the
manufacture of colorful toys containing
explosives which were dropped from airplanes. These toys, it was calculated, would attract children and when they
picked them up they would blow off their fingers or hands, thus serving the
double purpose of mutilating the next generation of revolutionaries, and
occupying the current generation of freedom fighters with the task of taking
care of the disabled in the years to come - very clever technology, conceived
by a special kind of person and well remunerated, once ownership of the patent
was established.
Resistance took creative turns as
well, but efforts to "stop the odious war machine" was usually violence
of a different kind. War resisters learned to distinguish shame from guilt, the latter being a reactionary sentiment which often leads to
repression and violent perversions; while feelings of shame often produced a
change of behavior which contributed to fighting against oppression and identifying, and everntually reducing,
reactionary forces in society.
The evil genius of war can and must
be resisted. [For more information on the Vietnam War and the resistance
movement it spawned in the US, please see the award-winning 1974 documentary “Hearts and Minds.”]

The dual explanation of the
crisis, the fake social turnaround by governments,
the need for radical responses

Marxists often hesitated at
the beginning of the present economic crisis: was it a classic, fundamentally
capitalist crisis whose warning signs had already been in evidence or was it a
specific crisis resulting from the pandemic? In the light of events, what is
your opinion now?
Éric Toussaint: The answer is plain to see:
the two explanations are not contradictory. A combination of the two enables us
to understand what has been happening right before our eyes. Before the Covid
pandemic, in 2019, a classic capitalist crisis had begun. There was a
significant reduction in industrial production in Germany and in several
industrial sectors of the USA; there was an economic slowdown in China in 2019,
the beginning of a financial crisis in the United States in September 2019, a
fall-off of productivity in the major economies, and profit rates were either
stagnating or had fallen. As this classic crisis was worsening, it was followed
in China in December 2019 then in Western Europe, North America and the rest of
the world in March 2020 by an enormous health crisis bringing chains of
production, supply and distribution to a standstill. Those economists who deny
the direct and specific effects of the pandemic on the economy are mistaken, as
are those who claim that the crisis is due to an external shock factor, meaning
the effects of the pandemic on the economy.
Unlike the illusions some
people nurture concerning the relaxation of institutional constraints (by the
EU, the IMF etc.) and the fall in interest rates, constraints linked to public
debt have certainly not disappeared. How do you see the "post-Covid"
situation in the North and the South?
You are quite right to say that some on the Left have a marked tendency to
present the new policies of central banks and governments since March 2020,
increasing budget deficits and public debt, as a fundamentally positive
turnaround. The danger is that this leads them to lower their guard and be less
critical of the economic policies brought to bear and of institutions like the
ECB, the European Commission and national governments. Yet increasing public
debt serves to set up social cushioning (unemployment benefits, one-off
financial aid for households and certain sectors of the economy that have been
particularly hard hit) without taxing capitalists and their companies. Nor has
there been any real refinancing of the public health sector. The constraints
linked to public debt have been considerably eased in the short term, but the
backlash of austerity and new structural measures will come in a year or two.
When the European instances insist on discipline in applying their treaties,
public debt will have increased so much that there will be strong demands for
deep budget cuts in public and social spending, combined with a demand for new
counter-reforms regarding the rights of workers and social welfare recipients.
What they should have done was to increase the public deficit to finance a
vast spending programme while at the same time complementing that policy with
1% taxation of the wealthiest section of society, whether that wealth be in
property or income.
In the end, the public spending recovery plan is very limited and entirely
funded through loans.
Among the new attacks that must be resisted are the acceleration of
automation/ robotization of work; the generalization of working from home where
workers are isolated, even less able to manage their time and have to carry a
whole series of extra costs connected to their work tools which they wouldn’t
have to pay for if they were physically in their workplace. There are new
attacks on public education, with the development of distance-learning which
increases cultural and social inequality; there is greater surveillance of private
life and control of personal information; means of repression have been
reinforced.
Lastly, it is obvious that the coronavirus pandemic has further increased
the unequal distribution of income and property ownership. Inequality in face
of illness and death has also risen dramatically.
Governments and Big Capital will only abandon this offensive against the
interests of the overwhelming majority of the global population if very
powerful mobilizations force them to make concessions or if a social revolution
carries the day.
The struggles that have erupted on several continents since June 2020,
especially the massive anti-racist struggles under the Black Lives Matter banner, show that the popular classes and young
people of the world are not prepared to accept the status quo.
In 2021, the
enormous popular demonstrations in Colombia, the progress seen in elections in
Chile and Peru, and more recently at the end of May and on 3 July, the
“anti-Bolsonaro” demonstrations in Brazil highlight yet again the massive
resistance of the peoples in Latin America.
We have to
contribute as much as possible to enabling a
powerful new social and political movement to bring
together the social struggles around the world; we must take part in drawing up
a programme to make a break from capitalism, by putting forward solutions that
are anti-capitalist, anti-racist, ecological, feminist and socialist.
Faced with the multifaceted crisis of capitalism and its headlong rush
towards environmental disaster, trying to fix or adapt capitalism is not really
an option. It would merely be a lesser evil that would not bring the radical
solutions that the situation requires.
In a recent article, you cite
Lissagaray, a historian and activist in the Paris Commune, who wrote of the Banque de France: “the Commune stopped
short in front of the Bourgeoisie’s strong-box”. It is an eternally relevant question:
how would you phrase it today?
The Banque de France was at the heart of the
Paris Commune. Following the events of March 1871, the Communards didn’t take
over the Bank, which remained in the hands of the Thiers government and
continued to finance it. (It received over 350 million gold francs, 20 times
more than the Commune got).
It was
Charles Beslay, who was a Proudhonian and the Commune’s delegate to the Banque de France, who convinced the
Commune not to “violate” (sic) or take control of the Bank. Beslay thus enabled
the Banque de France to continue to
finance Thiers who in turn was able to reorganize the Army and put down the
Commune. For Beslay, the Bank was France’s wealth and to take it over would
have signalled chaos. Significantly, Beslay was the only leader among the
Communards not to be executed, imprisoned or deported. He took refuge in
Switzerland with Thiers’s permission.
The Banque de France should have been taken
over physically. It would have been perfectly possible, without any bloodshed. It should have been placed at the Commune’s
disposal to prevent Thiers from using it to prepare the repression of the
Commune.
The chaos
argument has been used repeatedly over the centuries. We heard the same thing
in Greece from Varoufakis when he and Tsipras decided to leave the Governor of
the Bank of Greece in place despite him being a faithful ally of the Troika and
private Greek bankers. On the contrary, the Cuban revolutionaries took control
of the Bank of Cuba as soon as the revolution triumphed in 1959 and Che Guevara
became its governor. As for the Soviet government, it expropriated all the
Russian banks in December 1917.
When it comes to central banks, private banks and the finance sector in
general, we note an extremely serious erosion of the programmes of
leftward-leaning organizations. In 2019, the Labour Party Manifesto, under the
leadership of Jeremy Corbyn, although radical on a series of issues like renationalization and the cancellation of
student debt, was silent regarding the City of London and the Bank of England.
Bernie Sanders’ programme in 2019-2020, radical on issues of taxation and
student debt, was also silent about the Federal Reserve and the major private
banks. Programmes of other political organizations like Podemos, Diem25 or Die Linke, are either
silent or very moderate on the subject and therefore have nothing to offer
regarding the Central Bank, the big private banks, currency and public debt.
More generally, in financial matters, the solution is obvious: there
must be suspension of debt payments without any penalty for delay. Beyond
suspension of payment, in each country there should be debt audits carried out
with the active participation of citizens, to determine the illegitimate,
odious, illegal or unsustainable parts of public debt, which must then be
cancelled. The CADTM, which is a global
network mainly active in the South of the planet but also in the North, takes
the position that the need to have recourse to suspension of payments and debt
cancellation concerns not only the developing countries, emerging or not. It also concerns the countries of the North.
It is also
time to brave the issue of cancellation of abusive debts demanded of the
popular classes.

The latest round of fighting in Palestine may have ended with a ceasefire on 21 May, but the roots of the conflict remain unaddressed.
These roots, if left unattended, will only result in more escalation and more victims.
The structure of the Zionist project remains unchanged. It is a project that from its inception has been based on the uprooting of the native population in Palestine, ethnic cleansing, theft of land and resources, eradication of Palestinian identity, discrimination, the total control of the lives of the Palestinian people, and the denial of basic Palestinian rights.
As long as the project is the same, the only difference between short rounds of military escalation and so-called periods of calm is that of varying degrees of aggression. During military escalations, Israel kills Palestinians. During periods of calm, Israel steals Palestinian land.
Under both scenarios, Israel’s system of oppression humiliates Palestinians, controls their lives, uproots them, and discriminates against them.
But May’s escalation also demonstrated the determination of the Palestinian people and their steadfastness against Zionist attempts to supplant them, eradicate their identity, and break their morale.
One question that arose after the latest escalation, as it does after every escalation, is simply, who won?
Before answering, it is worth noting that the criteria for victory for a colonized people are different from the criteria for the colonial power.
This should be fairly obvious, but is worth elucidating anyway. Throughout history, colonial powers have enjoyed military superiority, international political support, and plentiful economic resources. It is these very advantages that allow colonial powers to invade other nations. A balance of power, in fact, would preclude colonialism.
As a result, colonized people’s loss of life and property were correspondingly greater. They bore the brunt due to the imbalance of power.
Avoiding false equivalence
Consequently, it is important to define the criteria to measure what victory or defeat looks like in this case without comparisons that make the mistake of equating the sides.
The strategic objective of the Zionist project since its inception is the establishment of a safe country for Jews from around the world. In order to morally justify this objective, the Zionist project portrayed Palestine as a land without a people.
It has utilized a wide variety of measures to eradicate the Palestinian identity and presence from the land, from direct massacres and forced expulsions to the destruction of villages and imposition of suffocating measures to undermine the Palestinian ability to survive. In Jerusalem, to this day, the Zionist project continues to prevent even the raising of the Palestinian flag.
Parallel to attempts to erase the Palestinian presence, the Zionist project also directed its efforts to manufacturing an image of Israel as a natural, safe, advanced and investor-friendly place – a normal country. This explains Israel’s exaggerated celebrations of every normalization of relations with any country, even if a small one.
Against these efforts, how did the Palestinian people resist?
The Palestinian people are winning first of all by simply maintaining their presence. The Palestinian identity is the very antithesis of the Zionist colonial project. The existence of the name of Palestine and the Palestinian people is a constant reminder that Israel is a colonial state that replaced the Palestinians and whose existence causes suffering to millions of Indigenous people.
The Zionist project surely hoped that Palestinians would suffer the same fate as the Indigenous population of North America and Australia. This did not happen. Israel has now to face the constant challenge of instability.
Palestinians not only maintained their existence, but changed the reality of suffering and subjugation exercised by the Zionist project to a state of resistance. Unwittingly, Israel has helped maintain this spirit of resistance. The humiliation at Israeli military checkpoints, continued land theft, the Judaization of Palestinian neighborhoods, and the system of apartheid are constant reminders that the reality is unadaptable, that the relationship with Israel is that of victim with aggressor and rightful owner with thief.

Today, science is being perverted for political ends to an unprecedented extent. To look for an appropriate analogy, we would have to go back to the authority of the Church in medieval Europe.

So G-d speaks through the mouth of the Pope, and maybe the Prophet Elijah and Charles Manson. But the Good Doctor of NIAID is the one with a direct line to Science.
My point is not that Fauci has grown too big for his britches, but that science is not religion. The whole reason that we trust science is that it’s a society of open debate. Dr Fauci aspires to be the high priest of epidemiology. But if science carries more weight than the Church, it’s not because its priests are smarter or better qualified, it’s because science has no priests.
Science means arguing the case on its merits, and arguing on the merits is exactly what they are trying to avoid by calling anyone who disagrees with them, “anti-science”.

Stella Moris, the partner of imprisoned WikiLeaks publisher Julian Assange, spoke outside Britain’s High Court yesterday warning he is “still at risk of extradition” after a judge decided the US government can appeal an earlier court ruling that blocked his extradition on health grounds.
The judge also ruled that Assange must remain in prison until the appeal is heard, effectively extending his incarceration for at least many more months.

Scholars have speculated that Shirley Jackson’s timeless story The Lottery (1948) was a contemplation of and attempt to make sense of the ghastly forms of rationalization at work in Nazi death camps uncovered during the postwar Nuremberg trials.
While the major theme of Jackson’s story, man’s general inhumanity toward humankind, continues to reverberate, the development of a certain character within the tale speaks even more profoundly to the present. Old Man Warner and his unblinking obedience to strange abstractions embody a banality of evil that appears in many of his fellow townsfolk and the codes of behavior and speech they are goaded by bizarre norms to embrace.
Questioning these abstractions and the traditions that animate them comes at a substantial price, however.
“Every man has his price” (Walpole, 1734) — an utterance on the lips of both despots and saints, past and present, eager to embrace or repel tyranny. The observation has the ring both of a universal truth and a hasty generalization.
In Jackson’s story, the price for the old man, intent to guard the prevailing socioeconomic order, was his own humanity. In the present, the saying resonates with those whose minds have been effectively dazzled by the global Pavlovian project observable in state-corporate propaganda which claims that a virus with a 99.8% survival rate spells certain doom for the world. They who demand that every living creature obey, without question, the unscientific irrational contradictory plans of the unfolding state-corporate global medical hegemony.
The competitively compliant masses, armed with faculties of reason effectively effaced, are all too happy to publicly signal their subservience and submit their civil and human rights to a technocratic global lordship consolidating the kind of control and power that will remain, forevermore, impervious to any challenge. How observable facts such as these elude the notice of so many people today is covered, most notably, in a popular university course in propaganda at New York University.
Mark Crispin Miller, world-renowned professor of media, culture and communication, has given Mass Persuasion and Propaganda for decades. In these times, however, of state-sanctioned “woke totalitarianism” enforced by its global big tech guardians, the course and its most famous professor was bound to become a target for cancellation.
The operation against Professor Miller began in earnest last year when a disgruntled student falsely claimed that her teacher was nurturing a student-led mutiny against the NYU administration for its masking policies. The latest and most baffling attack on Miller has emerged, however, with the publication of a hit piece titled “The Professor of Paranoia” in the Chronicle of Higher Education — a rank illustration of the truths we might see in the aphorism that every man can be bought.

It’s been raining incessantly for three days. It is a cool early morning in the beginning of July and I have just made a cup of coffee. Now an electrical power outage has occurred and so I am sitting in a rocking chair in the semi-darkness savoring my coffee and feeling thankful that I made it in time. I have a close relationship with coffee and the end of night and the break of day. As for time, that is as mysterious to me as the fact that I am sitting here in its embrace. The electric clocks have stopped. I think: To exist – how amazing!
More than the coffee, however, I am luxuriating in the sound of the tumbling rain. Its beautiful music creates a cocoon of peace within which I find temporary joy. The joy of doing nothing, of pursuing no purpose. Of knowing that whatever I do it will never be enough, for me or anyone, and the world will continue turning until time stands still, or whatever time does or is according to those who invented it. I will be gone and others will have arrived and the water will flow from the skies and the clocks will still tell people what they don’t know – time – although they will continue to tell it.
Humans are the telling animals.
A few weeks ago, when this area was in a mini-drought, the local newspaper, in the typical wisdom of such cant, had a headline that said “there is a threat of rain later this week.” They are experts at threats. This is the corporate media’s purpose. Rain is a threat, joy is a threat, doing nothing is a threat, the sun is a threat – but the real threats they conceal. To create fear seems to be their purpose, as they do not tell us about the real threats. Their purpose is not to tell the truth, but if you listen closely you can hear it.
In the middle of the night I woke up to go to the bathroom, and outside the small bathroom window I watched the rain engulfing the lower roof and sluicing down the shingles in two heavy streams. I thought how the desiccated mind of the headline writer must be feeling now, but then I realized that he or she was asleep, as usual. There is a moist world and a dry one, and the corporate media is run by arid souls who would like to make the world a desert like their masters of war in Washington.

I just got an urgent call from a woman in labor.
The hospital would not allow her into a labor & delivery room without a mask and pcr test.
She refused, so there was a stand-off.
She claimed religious exemption. The hospital staff (who claimed to be “following orders”) refused to honor her exemption and instead demanded a letter signed by clergy (which of course is a grave violation of her First Amendment right to her own religious beliefs).
In between contractions and in the hallway of the hospital, this brave woman reached out to me and asked me for a letter of religious exemption.
Of course, I stopped everything I was doing to help her and her birthing-partner husband, who also was told he needed a letter signed by clergy.
With no time to lose, I quickly jotted down valid religious reasons why this couple is entitled to decline masks and pcr tests, and why every G-d-fearing human being should do as well. I signed it and sent it off to her at once.
Thank G-d the woman was allowed to give birth in the hospital of her choice without submitting to draconian measures that violate her moral principles and would have added unnecessary distress while she’s laboring and pushing a child into the world.
This was a watershed moment for me.
As a teacher and religious leader, I always saw my role as a spiritual one, and never realized that I had a unique potential to rescue someone from bodily harm, let alone a total stranger.
As I reflect further, I realize that all the letters I’ve written on behalf of individuals seeking religious exemption to experimental injections– in an effort to protect their religious freedoms – have actually helped to shield them from bodily harm as well.
Perhaps that’s why the Bible exhorts us: “Guard your souls scrupulously.” While the verse speaks specifically of guarding one’s soul, i.e. one’s spiritual freedoms, our sages derive therewith the commandment to safeguard one’s life and bodily health as well.
In an effort to defend a fellow human being’s religious rights and spiritual values, I have aided this individual in defending her life against a potentially lethal injection that has already resulted in many thousands of deaths and lifelong injuries worldwide.
In gratitude, I humbly acknowledge my Creator for this awesome opportunity.
I also thank all the individuals who have given me this opportunity to assist them in defending not only their souls and spiritual integrity, but their bodies as well.
May G-d bless us all with fortitude to stand up to defend our fellow human beings at this perilous time, and may we all emerge from this unprecedented assault on humanity fully intact, body and soul.

With many focusing on the Cyber Polygon exercise, less attention has been paid to the World Economic Forum’s real ambitions in cybersecurity – to create a global organization aimed at gutting even the possibility of anonymity online. With the governments of the US, UK and Israel on board, along with some of the world’s most powerful corporations, it is important to pay attention to their endgame, not just the simulations.
Amid a series of warnings and simulations in the past year regarding a massive cyber attack that could soon bring down the global financial system, the “information sharing group” of the largest banks and private financial organizations in the United States warned earlier this year that banks “will encounter growing danger” from “converging” nation-state and criminal hackers over the course of 2021 and in the years that follow.
The organization, called the Financial Services Information Sharing and Analysis Center (FS-ISAC), made the claim in its 2021 “Navigating Cyber” report, which assesses the events of 2020 and provides a forecast for the current year. That forecast, which casts a devastating cyber attack on the financial system through third parties as practically inevitable, also makes the case for a “global fincyber [financial-cyber] utility” as the main solution to the catastrophic scenarios it predicts.
