(from The Lugano Report, on Preserving Capitalism in the Twenty-first Century, 1999)
The world now produces in less than two weeks the equivalent of the entire
physical output of the year 1900. Economic output (or throughput
, which conveys a more dynamic sense of the process of resources
capture, transformation and disposal) doubles
approximately every 25 to 30 years. Early in the next century, the scale of
activity will strain biospheric limits and even the capacity of the planet
to sustain life.
